Corbin Smuggler & Yamaha aluminum rear carrier

Post by Madmudder »

Has anyone mounted a Yamaha aluminum rear carrier & been able to install a Corbin Smuggler afterward?
I just finished installing my new Aluminum rear carrier & was unable to put my Smuggler back on the bike.
Does it require some adjustment or a modification to install with the new rack (1MC-F48D0-V0)?

Thanks in advance.

It can be done. I have a Smuggler mounted with the Yamaha aluminum rear rack. I bought both together from someone. The Smuggler was modified by the previous owner to make it work. I am on a cross country trip right now. But remind me in a week to take some photos of what the bottom of the modified Smuggler looks like.

I am not sure if you are aware, but Corbin now sells brand new Smugglers that work with the Yamaha aluminum rack if you don't mind paying ridiculous amounts of money for it.

What are you trying to do? Just cause you have a smuggler, it doesn’t mean you illegally import some illicit peanut butter across the border.

I had to modify my Smuggler to fit with the GIVI SR357 top case mount. I'll see if I can dig up the pics.

I sold the SR357 mount that would not fit the Smuggler either.

Going off memory here..... I think the PO ground away part of the bracketry of the Yamaha rack. Not enough that it looks like an issue. I'll try to get some pics soon.

Spoke to Corbin this morning and was advised to put a couple of washers behind the bar that seats into the back of the bike and remove the center pin at the latch part. These mods did nothing, but I was able to determine the 2 center bumpers on an angle interfere with the added brackets added with the new grab rail. The issue with just removing them to see if this will allow it to seat is they are held on with rivets and the internal carpet covers the rivet inside so more research is required

I installed my Smuggler with a Givi rack, just had to add some washers to the rearmost bumpers on the Smuggler (as Corbin suggests). Seems like it was about 1/4" of spacers required. Good luck!

The Givi rack is completely different than the Yamaha accessory aluminum rack. What works for one won't work for the other.

Here's a snippet from the installation instructions that I received with my new Smuggler:

NOTE: If you have the rear rack/top case mount (#1MC-F48DO-V0-00), used for the 50 Liter Top Case, you will need to add spacers to the Smuggler's rear bracket and rear rubber bumpers. Remove the bracket and place 2 spacers under each side of the bracket and secure with the provided 1/4 X 20 button head Allen bolts. Remove the bumpers and place 2 spacers under each bumper and secure with the provided 8/32 X 3/4 button head Allen bolts.

As a precaution, I actually purchased the Yamaha aluminum rack just in case I would not be successful getting the Smuggler to fit with my Givi rack. To my delight, I was able to get it to fit by using the spacers provided by Corbin and using their suggested steps. Since I no longer needed the aluminum rack, I sold it.

Thank you I have also attached the link provided by Corbin. My issue is the bumpers are riveted to the pan so I am waiting to hear from Corbin on exactly what needs to be done. Hope you made it home safe Skooter.
