February 4th, 2025 – Update – A new option for adding pictures to a post on FJRiders.com.

The Postimages extension has been installed and enabled. This extension (i.e. added feature) utilizes the Postimages.org website to host your picture, and the extension creates the coding to display the picture in your post. Please review the terms of use on Postimages.org for details on their requirements / limitations.

Use this feature at your own discretion / risk. Understand that your image is posted on the Postimages.org website and is subject to the terms of use published by Postimages.org as linked above. The FJRiders.com team is not responsible for the storage or function of the PostImages.org website. As a reminder, all images / pictures / videos posted must comply with the exisitng forum guidelines (posted here) and the Backard Forum Rules (posted here) - specifically these 2 points:
  • From Forum Guidelines: "You may link to your own business site in your forum profile. You may not link to other business sites including click-thru or Pay-per-click schemes. Personal sites may also be listed in the profile. Links to pornographic or offensive websites or photos, personal or otherwise, are not allowed".
  • From Backyard Subforum Rules: "No pornographic or illegal content."
You can choose to agree or disagree with the criteria established above - the goal with this update is to provide a simple and no cost option for members to post / share (appropriate) pictures. I (Wayne) am not interseted in a debate on the topic of censorship, freedom of speech, etc. in this thread. We reserve the right to remove a member for non-complaince or abuse of this feature. Such actions, if needed, will be taken from the perspective of the preservation and survival of this website / community forum.

This feature addresses the requests from membership for a way to post images on FJRiders.com without having a paid photo hosting service (such as Smugmug, Flickr, Photobucket, etc.).

Directions for use:
New Post window – click the “Add image to post” link that is below the new post text box (circled in red below).

It is available on the “quick reply” as well.

The Postimage Extension dialog / pop-up box appears.
Image

You can drag & drop an image in the dialog box, or use the “Choose Images” button to navigate to and select the picture you want to add to the post. A status bar will be displayed while the image is uploaded to Postimage.org; once complete, the dialog box will close, and your post will have the shortcode for the picture inserted into your post.

Use the “Preview” button to view the post with the picture displayed.

Preview looks like this:

Seems to work, although I wouldn't count on the hosting to be a permanent link and might not choose it to archive images for a detailed ride report or tech article. Still, free and easy to use is nice.

Apparently posts as a thumbnail and opens in a new (PostImages) window if you click on it. Nice to have the option.

Edit: You can choose an image from your computer or you can copy from somewhere and just paste anywhere on the page that it links to. No membership required.

It works pretty well although perhaps not as permanent as native posting on this site. (I understand the reasons for that decision.)

If you allow "Direct Link" as opposed to "Thumbnail for Forums" from PostImages, it might be better for some stuff, but I suppose you can't control image size on the page. On many forums where photos are hosted on-site, the poster has an opportunity to resize the image to fit - don't know if it would be possible here.

This is a nice change, thanks.

Sorry. There are plenty of ways to find that if it's your thing...

Make sure to read the “terms of use” everyone.

Also, you probably will want to get permission from anyone in a photo you post with this.

It’s another option to paid photo hosting, and kudos to Wayne and staff for giving us that option.

Instead of the thumbnail for forums, can this be set up to do "Direct Link" instead? Larger picture and you don't need to click to go to Postimages.org at all, unless you want to download or zoom in.

It is an option, but requires modifying code within the phpBB software. That is outside of my comfort zone, but Tim is going to look at it when he gets time. I wanted to get the feature launched so that it's availabe.

Understood. Just thought the direct link (as per the pic in my post above) was a little more appealing than opening a separate window to the Postimages site every time you wanted a closer look.
The ability to easily post photos is a great addition to the site.
