Black Friday Ride Tradition continues, 2023 Edition

Well, it continues. First rode with Jason on a dayride on Black Friday of 2018 at his invite. Added bonus, some guy named Lumberg was going to be riding as well. Who knows what he was gonna be like...probably a dick. At least Jason was gonna be there. I'll try and wrestle up some photos from that day...

It turns out Lumberg isn't a dick...jackass maybe.

That was a great day, and many others followed, including Frosty balls rides that Jason would announce. But sadly, those days are past.

However, today is a new day, and Lumberg wanted to ride on Black Friday... so I took up his challenge. It was a perfect day weather wise... Cool enough to keep the wannabees at home, but good enough not to worry about black ice... too much.
We met in Clayton, took Warwoman Rd east to 28 north (awesome riding) to Deals Gap, where we took a break...I led because Lumberg faked injuries.

After following me for awhile, he had enough, so he led from the Gap to Tellico Plains. Cherohala was glorious! As per tradition, we stopped at Turkey Creek Overlook. We have remembered our fallen friends, Jason and Duane, here. We did it again today.

We miss our friends, taken way WAY too soon...

We both toasted our riding buddies, past and present.

During the westbound Cherohala leg, the eastbound shaded lane looked wet and iffy in spots...so I adjusted and we took 68south, where I blasted east on US76 towards home and Lumberg continued south to his Georgia palace. 430 miles for me...7am to 5pm.

It was a meaningful day, full of fun...and getting reacquainted riding together. There was a point this year when I thought an embarrassing physical malady was bringing my beloved FJR riding to a close. The jury is still out on multi-day rides, but so far, after several dayrides this fall, it looks like all day day rides are back in the mix. That makes me happy... FJR friends are the best...and I don't want to lose any more of them.

Gixxerjasen was right. I'm still in the game.

The Lumberg photos made me laugh out loud. I laughed because I do the same thing.

Glad y’all had a good ride. I think your previous condition was just your body making you unattractive to Oface to protect yourself from his rubber ding dongs.

You were both in my thoughts today - Lumberg provided a mid day checkin and then hearing Wheaton's voice this evening told me the day was everything it needed to be.

Well done, Gentlemen, Well Done.

Excellent route, excellent company. And we had extrememarine as a distant wingman, tracking the ride.

I rode with jwilly a lot for several years. Wheaton and I would form a sort of an unholy (Sorry Louanne) trinity with him for winter riding.

I know some cool folks, for sure.

Yep. Very tough. Today was good.

Don't tell the class about my jackass passing at the end, okay?

Despite your reputation, I’ve never seen you perpetrate a pass I would not have taken. Krazny.

So you are f’in nuts too, huh?

I still think back to following Duane and Mark, in the rain, through the mountains and having them pass cars in blind curves, in the rain. I think “no f’in way I’m doing that” was said multiple times in our coms.

Then, the Wheaton pass came and we thought we were about to watch someone get hurt badly, or worse.

Later on we heard that Duane was on their coms on that one saying “Now there’s a Wheaton Pass”.

I hope I never forget that ride.

Note: When Duane passed on a curve it was because he scanned for traffic 2-3 curves ahead for oncoming vehicles.

Everybody has their own passing style, I try to make mine as short, time-wise, as possible. Speed can, but not always, makeup for some error in judgement.

Lumberg is a much more polite passer than I am. But, like jwilly, will pass with authority.

I was thinking about you two while on my own ride yesterday. Jonesing about being with ya'll, but moreover, hoping it was going as you describe here.

This is very good stuff to read.

Glad to hear you are comfortable riding again.

The three rules for soon to be "Old Farts"
1. Never miss an opportunity to pee!

3. Never waste an erection!!!

Would have been better in the backyard, but I'm sure the Public is impressed with your sage wisdom.

Thank-you for noticing!

Hey, I was 44 when I bought my first FJR and I'm like 75 now...so yeah, lost a step, marbles, wallet, comb, toothpicks...
