Went and did it...

Post by BeardBarreBokeh »

Well, I did it. After lurking here and on a FB group for several months, I decided, "enough thinking about it, just do it!"

Found a good deal on a barely used 2021 last week and brought it home yesterday. Because of the lack of units within "short" distances from me, I rode my Vstrom 650 a couple hundred miles to the dealer, made sure the Yammie was what I wanted, and rode it home.

I ADORED my Vstrom. It was my first motorcycle and served me well. I was never disappointed in it. But, let me tell you, the ride home on the Yamaha was WAY better than the ride there on the Strom. The FJR adores the pavement.

I must admit that I was nervous the first time I threw a leg over the FJR. Reading about how "top heavy" it is made me a bit apprehensive. But, perhaps because I cut my teeth on a pretty top-heavy "adventure bike" in the Vstrom, I found the FJR completely docile and compliant.

I'd love to say that the bike is perfect, but there are few things I can tell I'll want to do. I actually don't mind the amount of wind from the stock windscreen (again, I'm coming from a strom, ha!) but I'll need to AT LEAST adjust the factory position of the bars back and, perhaps add risers/bar backs. The ride wasn't uncomfortable, but it could be MORE comfortable. That said...an upgraded seat may be in the future, too. ;-)

Anyway, I look forward to participating in discussions on the board instead of just reading them.

If anyone is in my neck of the woods (sandhills of NC), I'd love to find a riding buddy (or three).

Congrats, once you get it tweaked just right, it's a keeper.

Also, you'll never get it tweaked just right, always some adjustments and new parts necessary. Ok, not necessary but you know what I mean. ;)

I'd say the one consistent farkle I see is a new seat.

Russel is the tractor seat, but people love it... all the super long distance guys use them...
Lamm has been a newer maker for people the last few years.
Sargent makes a decent seat and is the one I've always gone with on my FJRs.

There's a ton more but you can't go wrong with any of these.

Post up in the "wanted" section if your looking for something. Somebody might have one laying around their garage...LOL

Terry Adcox is another seat option, similar to a Russell and much cheaper.
I'd call the stock seat on an FJR a one hour seat....

I was on it for 485 miles on Saturday. Anybody can suffer through a fun day ride on the stocker. Its those back to back days and weeks where the aftermarkets come in.

I don't believe Terry is making seats at the moment.
