The Truncated Trifecta - A [s]three plus[/s] two week Odyssey throughout the West
Posted: Mon Aug 23, 2021 1:05 pm
I'm headed out on a three plus week adventure on Tuesday.
Tuesday morning we (AbercrombieFJR and I) will leave Spearfish and head South down through the Rockies to Alamosa CO, we will camp somewhere in Northern Colorado Tuesday night and arrive in Alamosa on Wednesday evening after touring the Rockies.
Skip (ZZZipp) will meet us in Alamos at my riding buddy Kid's.
On Thursday we (all four) will ride North and then up over Independence Pass and on to Glenwood Springs CO for the weekend NAFO 2021 (National FJR Owners Meeting) event.
While in Glenwood Springs we will ride 2-300 miles each day seeing the sights etc.
On Sunday Aug 29th Skip and Abercrombie will head to their respective homes while my friend Kip and I will leave Glenwood Springs and work our way West to YFO just South of Bridgeport CA for Labor Day weekend. We plan on staying up as high as we can before making an early morning blast across US 50 or US 6 on Wednesday, then riding South to Bridgeport CA trying to avoid any fires en route. We will be at the Virginia Settlement Thursday- Sunday AM for a really special event put on by a really great lady. While here we will ride as many Sierra passes as we can certainly Sonora, Luther, Ebbetts, Carson, Tioga (if we can get a Yosemite Transit permit), Kingsbury Grade, and maybe others, we will try to visit the ghost town of Bodie while we are there.
On Sunday we plan on leaving the Settlement and heading South down US 395 before turning West and riding over the Sherman Pass. I think I've ridden over all of the Sierra Nevada passes but the Sherman Pass, I want to check that box.
We will probably camp up high Sunday night before blasting across the San Joaquin Valley en route to the coast at Morro Bay on Monday, and up the coast on CA 1 to San Francisco on Tuesday. A kind friend has offered us dinner and a place to lay our heads in San Francisco on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday morning my Kip heads back to Alamosa CO while I continue up the Coast as far as Oregon. I hope to visit the Lost Coast before cutting over to La Pine OR (just North of Crater Lake) arriving on Thursday evening. La Pine is the location of the "Tenth Annual Reuben Run". You can get just about the best Reuben sandwich in the world at "The Depot" in La Pine, just ask the 50 some motorcyclists that will show up this weekend to eat one or two.
After riding central Oregon, I'll leave La Pine on Sunday and take a couple of days to get to Pterodactyl's in Helena, MT.
After a day or two in Helena, I'll head towards Spearfish. I haven't ridden the "Highline" on my bike, it adds a few miles but if the weather isn't too hot or too wet, one can only hope for some rain up there in Northern Montana, I might just do it. I'll be looking for some friends hunting sharp tail grouse and Hungarian partridges along the Highline, maybe we will share a few lies and a beer or two one evening.
Here are the planned routes, all good until the first stop sign or the first interesting looking road along the way, can you spell "serendipitous"? Gravel is part of the adventure but Google Maps doesn't like to show or do gravel. we have a fair bit on our schedule.

Looks like about 5,100 miles of "Travel" and I figure another 1,400 miles of "Recreational Riding" at the three events. Should just about burn up another set of tires and about 135 gallons of Premium. Glad to try and meet any inmates along the way for a beer or a coffee.
The first update will be from Alamosa next Wednesday night.
