Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I'm starting this thread for owners who have completed the transmission recall and associated ECU reflash.
Today I was out on my first extended ride since having the recall service completed and I noticed a significant issue with the post-recall performance of my 2016 ES.
My issue is now, when I try to launch the bike in 1st gear, the rev limiter is kicking in at approximately 3,000 RPM. It only happens when I'm slipping the clutch. The bike will rev normally once the clutch is fully engaged. I don't understand why Yamaha would do this when 2nd gear was the problem cog. The engine revs freely in neutral and in all gears after the clutch lever is released fully.
Can someone else here who knows the reflash has been completed verify this problem for me please. If this is unique to my bike, what would cause this?

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
There is no perceptible difference in the sound or function of my bike post-recall. Everything works exactly as it did before. I can’t say I make a habit of feathering the clutch in first gear at 3,000 rpms though...

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I have not heard any thing about 3000 when feathering the clutch.....
In another sandbox, I sought clarity from a poster who noticed it seemed to "hit the rev limiter" at 5000 rpm in first or second, I don't know which, wasn't clear, still isn't.... others have noticed nothing, but I'm not sure that anyone's tested it... so I'll ask.....
If with clutch fully out in first gear, can you rev past 5000 or even more..... same in second..... no issues once you're in third or higher as far as I know. Should also test that while downshifting from above 5000 into second.... might be like putting the brakes on....???
The gist of the reflash was to limit power in second.......

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
We don't really know what it was about 2nd that prompted Yamaha to take such extreme action. We don't know if 2nd broke when a shift from 1->2 wasn't perfectly executed? I know that happens to me when it takes 2 stabs to get from 2->3.
If clutch is slipping at 3,000 RPM then you could drop the clutch and shock the transmission with an impact faster and harder than the relatively slow acceleration of opening the throttle.

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I have no issue in any gear once the clutch is released. It is only in 1st gear when slipping the clutch. I did not test whether I could downshift into 2nd above 5000 rpm.

I rode home about 25-30 miles from the service center and "tested" the trans. I don't remember any differences in 1-6 gears, and 1,2,3 appeared more smooth. I also don't believe I was hard on the gas though in 1,2 gears. Next time I'm out I'll see what happens. I know 4,5,6 seemed smoother while I was being an asshole.

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I'm just trying to figure out if this is unique to my bike or part of the reflash. If it's part of Yamaha's "fix" I will have Ivan reflash it. If not, I want the dealership to fix it.

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I cannot imagine that Yamaha now wants the rev limiter to engage at 3,000 rpm for ONLY clutch engagement out of first gear. There is no correlation between this and the scope of the work for the recall.
IF that was my bike, back to the dealership it would go, pronto.

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
See if it persists, I can't imagine it is part of the recall and I've not heard of this before..... dealer can call Yammy and see whazzup and what the features of the reflash are, 'cuz it's still all a bit fuzzy.

I was hoping with all the people here having the recall service completed someone could tell me if mine is a unique issue. I'll be talking to the dealership next.

I assume you are not getting some minor wheel slip with hard acceleration causing the traction control to activate?

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I don’t think it’s normal. Can’t get mine to do anything like that. If it’s consistently repeatable and you’ve eliminated different causes that could cause the same perceived change, I would talk to the dealer for sure.

Well children, I haven’t been out post recall due to salty roads. When I do, trust me when I say I’ll put things to the test.
Hopefully this weekend.

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
I've got a few new observations regarding my bike.
I don't believe it is the rev-limiter.
It does it with traction control on or off.
It does it in 1st and 2nd gear (when slipping the clutch)
Roll on acceleration is fine in all gears.
It is easy to repeat so I should be able to demonstrate the issue to the dealer.

Re: Transmission Recall ECU Reflash
OK - so if not the rev limiter, maybe it is just something as simple as an ECU sensor connector not making full contact, causing the motor to run poorly under certain conditions.
Looking forward to the rest of the story....
