Very pretty. I'm sure it's dead reliable too. It does seem to have moved the needle more toward sport than tour.

Once the bike is rolling and in third gear the turbo would be fun. I can tell you from running my stock FJR at the drag strip that a turbo motor with a stock rear swing arm would be more than a handful to get off the line and into second gear. Not to mention a lack of a wheelie bar. Even with a stock FJR, from the time you leave the line and hit 9k rpm there almost isn't enough time to shift into second without pinging the rev limiter. At a drag strip with a properly treated launch pad you can get after the bike unlike you can on the street. The turbo would be another serious complication to deal with.
One would assume that there is some kind of integrated turbo management using engine inputs. I've seen some of these builds and I would *really wonder* just how sorted out that setup really is. The poster doesn't mention how much he is willing to pay you to get the PITA out of his yard

It just so happens Scott (CanadianFJR) is a record holding speed king. Maybe we should do a GoFundMe for Scott.

I know a guy who put an aftermarket turbo kit on a CBR600. He practically insisted i take it for a blast on the 400 (3 lane hwy).
It felt like a typical 600 sport bike when you pinned it. The lag was excessive. You'd be waiting to see your maker and nothing. Then all of a sudden, you were looking at the sky.
Fack that.
He took it off the following week and sold it to somebody else. To this day he still laughs his head off telling the story.

I was texting buddy the other night but he wouldn’t say a price. I see now it’s listed for $5,500.00
He tells me it’s never been on a dyno but I suspect it’s kicking out around 250 hp at the rear tire.
No progressive boost valve, when this one hits its gonna hit hard. A true point & shoot.

That would effectively double the motors horsepower. Not saying that’s impossible, but while efficient, turbochargers aren’t usually THAT efficient. Especially since one might presume that much of it is “seat of the pants” engineering.
I’d guess more like 50 crankshaft horsepower, if he can get 15-ish pounds of Boost out of it.
Be nice to use the bike as a sacrificial lamb and crank on the wastegate until the bottom end craps the bucket. I wonder how much the crank and rod bearings can take.

Could this 850cc turbo be the engine for the next FJR?
Or will they reserve it for sportbikes?

Edit: 180 HP and 130 ft-lb in an 850cc motor. Wonder if it would have the reliability and longevity we have come to expect from Yamaha engines? Could be substantially detuned and still blow away the current in-line four.

Yamaha makes a 998cc turbo 3 cylinder for the snowmobile crowd. @ 200hp.

Ross - the reliability of turbo motors is way up. I think if it's designed for the increased combustion chamber pressures, and it has the 3 tuning forks on it, then we should expect good service.
What's nice about the turbo and a (relatively) smaller motor is that you probably won't have to wind up the sewing machine to get it to go. The torque curve should be favorable. To be honest, that is what I like most about the FJR's performance. The power band is very linear and it makes torque from 3,000 rpm.

That might do it although I don't know whether an engine made for a snow machine would translate well to a MC. Not saying it wouldn't but I just don't know. I was aware of that motor but there doesn't seem to be much cross-pollination between Yamaha divisions. I wonder if it would meet the Euro 5 specs?
Anyway, if the FJR dies and is reincarnated at some point I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of 3 cylinder turbo in it.

The Cycle World article says that the engine will probably meet Euro 6 specs and Yamaha is waiting to see what Euro 6 is before releasing the engine.

Most engines Ford makes these days are turbocharged. Am constantly amazed how my F-150 is the size F-250s used to be and has "only" a 2.7L engine rated 325HP. I have no reason to doubt the rating.
But on a motorcycle the complexity of the FJR is already tugging at my limits. I want performance, comfort, and convenience but I also want easier maintenance. The F-150 turbochargers do not complicate maintenance but could be expensive to repair. The good thing is F-150 turbochargers are virtually commodities now, not exotic, rare, or difficult to find parts.

Heads up. In igloomikfuktuk, turbo engines have a much harder life. For some reason, spinning an impeller at 30,000 rpm with oil thick from a balmy -35c tends to shorten longevity remarkably.
