Re: Summer 2020 ride..
Bob, I apologize. I quickly looked at the post and thought it was an advertisement for an upcoming ride. My response was inappropriate.

If COVID isn't an issue, I expect to get to Winnipeg. That looks like a nice alternative to the TCH from Whiteshell.CollingsBob wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 9:35 am We do have a couple of kinda twisty roads in Manitoba...

I have been to and through Winnipeg at least a half dozen times on the bike but haven't done much exploring of the roads around the city.

Just east of Rennie, take #307 to 7 Sisters, then south on #11, west on #44 past Beausejour to #59, south to Winnipeg...or you can just text me and I’ll meet you at WestHawk where there is a great little restaurant.. http://hi-pointrestaurant.ca/FJRoss wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 9:19 pmIf COVID isn't an issue, I expect to get to Winnipeg. Re: Summer 2020 ride..
Looks decent. The ride from Whiteshell to Winnipeg is a pretty boring (but fast) run. Timing depends on the COVID situation - whether travel restrictions are still in place and when my vaccination comes up. Just found out my daughter (in Winnipeg) is expecting their second child in early summer so I have additional incentive to go.CollingsBob wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:16 amJust east of Rennie, take #307 to 7 Sisters, then south on #11, west on #44 past Beausejour to #59, south to Winnipeg...or you can just text me and I’ll meet you at WestHawk where there is a great little restaurant.. http://hi-pointrestaurant.ca/FJRoss wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 9:19 pmIf COVID isn't an issue, I expect to get to Winnipeg. I usually do Fredericton to Winnipeg in 3 x ~1100 km (700 mile) days. I can either make the first two days longer to leave extra time for this excursion or take an extra day along the way. Google says it is only an additional hour and a half but with a stop along the way for food, it would be more. Was also thinking about taking the 11 + TCH from Thunder Bay instead of the 17. Always planned to do that but always seemed to be too short on time to make the extra hour's ride. I usually take the Canadian route from New Brunswick. Through Algonquin west of Ottawa on the 60 and the 400 up to Sudbury. Then the Trans Canada along Superior rather than the 11 from North Bay - overall a couple hours longer but worth it; especially if weather is decent.
A long time between now and then...

Re: Summer 2020 ride..
The speed limit on #17 is 90km/hr...but I’ve cruised at 105km/hr without drawing any attention from the gendarmes.. Hwy#11 is also 90km/hr and there is a lot less traffic, fewer towns & gas stops, but it feels like the OPP might pay more attention to anyone exceeding the limit.

Re: Summer 2020 ride..
Yup. The OPP payed a little more attention than I wanted on the #17 just outside of Dryden, Ontario a couple years ago. Almost empty highway in very good condition, beautiful sunny and dry day and a 90 km/h speed zone. I got stopped for doing maybe 115 km/hr in the middle of a weekday afternoon. At least he wrote me up for a cheaper ticket. (Only moving violation ticket I ever got although I have had a few warnings along the way.)CollingsBob wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 11:17 am The speed limit on #17 is 90km/hr...but I’ve cruised at 105km/hr without drawing any attention from the gendarmes.. Northern Ontario speed limits are principally for revenue generation rather than safety. That highway from Thunder Bay to Kenora is almost 500 km and is deathly boring if you maintain the speed limit. 100-105 km/hr probably won't get you stopped but anything over that is a problem. Most of that road would be perfectly safe at considerably higher speeds.

Re: Summer 2020 ride..
I rode #11 to Thunder Bay a couple of years ago...the pavement is in very good condition, wide cleared areas on the sides of the road. I figure it would be perfectly comfortable at 140-160km/hr with stretches at 240..

I'm blaming it on spell check because I wasn't drinking last night but it was close to midnight.

Re: Summer 2020 ride..
Hwy 11 between thunder bay and fort francis is probably the smoothest hwy in all Ontario. Also the most desolate. Except for atikoken (pop. 2000?)between t bay and fort francis, you'd better hope the animals are out to give you something to look at/for
