Link for Canadian bikes (2016-2020 model years)...
Reported for Germany as well. Didn't see anything for USA

Yamaha will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your motorcycle to a dealer to replace the transmission assembly with one that has an updated design and reprogram the electronic control unit (ECU)
Possibly this is the European AS auto clutch models. No AE/AS in the US so no recall.

The link I provided was for Canada. The auto-clutch version hasn't been sold here since they were discontinued in the US. I assumed (perhaps in error) that Canada Moto Guide wouldn't be listing a recall that applies to Europe?

Just great. I hear that they’ve recalled a handful of bikes, and now mine is getting terrible gas mileage. Mine burned almost 35 gallons of gas yesterday alone. This is terrible.

Id say you got the gas mileage you deserved from hearing of the Marty/jwilly speeds you may have been running for xxxx miles.

But as LKLD Rob found out if second gear goes out it cost more than the bike is worth to fix it.

I guess I didn’t close the deal on my edit. To me, the ranges and affected number (under 1,000) didn’t match up. I guess I’m waiting to see if more data is forthcoming. I think the ranges are right. Just waiting. Appears to be super isolated. Like the few days that Randy from the temp agency was working on the assembly line.

Can’t be too common, haven’t heard of any newer models with a tranny that $h!t the bed.

I have an email into my dealer to see what he knows about it.

One interesting point in this:

JYARP286000005569

J Japan
Y Yamaha
A division that manufactured it
RP286 features of the bike
0 check sum to validate VIN
0 model year 2020
0 plant where the bike was assembled
digits 12 to 17 the order in which the bikes came off the assembly line

So this VIN is for a 2020 motorcycle and it is the 5569th bike off the assembly line. How many FJRs does Yamaha build every year? At least 5569 bikes.

Edit: The two ranges of VINs that were posted here from which I got this VIN have mysteriously disappeared.

The original post at the other sandbox was for a German website (translated by Google) that listed serial number ranges
https://translate.google.com/translate? ... -getriebe/

Once I saw that one, I looked for a domestic source and found the Transport Canada and the other one (Canada Moto Guide) I posted.

Not necessarily true.... auto experience at play on a muli-vehicle assembly line... the manufacturer is only required to establish the last six digits for records. The rest of the VIN designates model year, etc. They can choose a range for a certain homologation, so German ones may be a certain range (theoretically let's say the 4-5000 series, US might be the 0-2000 series. Doesn't mean they built 5569 that year, that would be a max, but the actual total FJR's made could be less.
In auto, we never started the last six number with a zero for a new model year at my plant. However Yamaha wants to do it is up to them as long as there is never a duplicate VIN.
There is a second system called Sequence Number, that is for internal control only and assignment of the order in which the vehicle travels down the assembly line... and the order in which they come off. You would never know this number unless someone left a build sheet in the vehicle, but don't use many of those either, it's a bar code that is scanned at various stages so we know where it is in the plant.
We didn't batch build either unless it was in paint, but they went into a buffer and were randomly assigned another sequence number for the trim and final line. Motorcycles are very most likely batch built and the line stocked with components for that build, kinda silly if they weren't actually.

In the early years of PDP I saw photographs of VINs that proud people showed off at delivery time, some with numbers less than 10.

Hey, Ray explained it, don't confuse him with contradictory information.

A little more (translated) info. Numbers make more sense.
The vehicle / chassis numbers involved in the full recall are as follows:
From JYARP281000000301 to JYARP281000002510;
From JYARP286000000301 to JYARP286000005300;
From JYARP286000005511 to JYARP286000005549;
The VINs for which only ECU reprogramming is required are:
From JYARP286000005301 to JYARP286000005510
From JYARP286000005550 to JYARP286000005569

I believe Ray has explained why those VINs are bullshit. That they are in sequential blocks means nothing.
