How to Clear Gen 4 Fault Code

I did a valve check, replaced the engine coolant and spark plugs on my Gen 4 '17. I also removed the air induction system because that's what most of us do. I did it on my 09.

Next I added engine coolant, installed the tank along with the three connectors underneath and fired up the bike. The check engine light comes on and stays on. I talked with --G about this and decided to reconnect the air induction system. After re-installing the PAIR I fire up the bike and it runs great. Unfortunately the check engine light comes on and stays on.

I have triple checked all the electric connectors I touched when I performed this work with no problem found.

I check for error codes in the FSM and find this on page 8-114. Seems on Gen 4 will cause the check engine light on if the air induction system is not present.

Do you agree the check engine light is on because I started the bike without the air induction system?

So am I the first remove the induction system on a Gen 4? If so do I get an special award? :D

How do I clear the error code without the Yamaha special tool?

I'm only liking 'cause you get the award. ;)

I've done enough already...gotta piece of black tape Fontanaman? Strategically placed, the CE light will disappear from view!

Clearing cel faults on gen 4's is about like clearing them on cars with obd2 diagnostics. There is a cable under the front seat that can be connected to but you'll need an adapter to transition to the obd2 connection. You can buy the adapter in the forum store and then plug in an obd2 automotive scanner to go in and clear the code.

Do you have an suggestion on an ODB2 I should purchase?

Heck if the cable is under the seat I can take it to the dealer and have it done for not a lot of coin. This is good to know.

Yes the dealer should have the oem cable hook up and software to make it happen. I bought a $30ish garden variety scanner don't remember what brand off of Amazon that I could pair to my phone and it did the trick.

Jim, removing the PAIR solenoid will cause a CEL when the ECU detects it isn't there. You must at leasr leave the solenoid in place and connected on a '16 up. The only way to access codes and clear them is by dealer or with an OBD adapter harness and OBD reader....... details here, however, if inventory levels of OBD harnesses has gone to zero, you will have to obtain one elsewhere. There are many listings on ebay.....

You can "order" at least the instruction sheets from the FJRiders store, or I can email them to you as .pdf..

Here you go for the ebay link to a US source... search for Yamaha OBD2 4 pin cable. There are many from Chinese sources now.

Thanks Ray for confirming my suspicions. Online orders deliveries are delayed these days so I will go visit the dealer and see if they can help me out for a few bucks to get rid of the light ASAP.

Something about sharing an award with Cav47 comes to mind right now! :D

We have an auto parts chain (Autozone) that will lend OBD II readers for free so you can read and clear codes. Of course the expectation is that you will buy the repair parts from them to fix the fault that set the light. You may want to check with some of your local parts stores and see if they can read/clear codes. You don't have to tell them you know what set the code and what the code is Image

You can use any OBD reader, but you need the adapter harness so you can plug it in..... now iff'n somebody really wanted to jury rig it with 4 terminals into the Yamaha connector (one is 12V power so no shorting please!!).. I can give you the pinout for the 4 wires in both the Yamaha connector and the OBD adapter...... in other words, make 4 jumper wires.....

Hello all. I appreciate all the comments how to fix. This. I got the bike back together after the valve check and road it to the local Yamaha dealer today.

For the princely sum of $30 dollars they will clear the code. Their tool was not working today and the mechanics were on lunch break. If there tool is fixed on Tuesday I will return and get the code cleared.

Went to the dealer today. They removed the check engine light for the princely sum of $0.00, as in free. As expected the light stayed off too so there was a big silver lining in my day.
