Any report on the Road 5 GTs yet?
Time for some new shoes. Who's got the Road 5 GTs, and what's your report? Interested in knowing:
1. Wet road grip
2. Longevity - how are they wearing (front cupping, etc), how long do you expect they will last in mileage?

Yep. I’ve been riding the shit out of them. Highway and mountain. Feel as good as anything I’ve used in the mountains and in the rain. And lord knows I’ve been in some rain since these went on.
No unusual or accelerated wear. I’ll have to wear them out to be able to tell you how long they’ll go. They still look good.

I purchased a set last fall when there was a rebate out. So far I've found the grip is great, they haven't slid off the shelf yet and I think they will last forever never leaving the garage. I'll update my report when the glacier recedes and I get them mounted up on the FJR.

I couldn’t say. I guess about 5,000 on the rear and maybe 1,000 less on the front. They seem to be wearing as long as the PR4GT’s I normally favor.

I saw a front one on a Iron butt Florida FJR the other day.
Looks like the middle of the front tire is harder than a PR 4 and the sides are softer.
Looks like to me that transition point is going to wear out first and you are going to have a rib in the middle.
He was dark side on the back.

Yep. 10/10 for this tire everywhere else. Love them. I like them better than the 4GT’s. They feel better in the twisties to me. I just can’t forecast how long they’ll last. I’m about 4-5k in and the front looks great. Not scalloped at all. They feel like I just put them on

If I am doing dry weather mountain day rides, I like Pilot Power front and PR2 rears. But I will not use that combo on a cross country trip or when significant rain is expected. The Michelins are known for good wet weather characteristics. I especially like the fact that they are consistent through the life so far.

2. PR4 GTs - about $339.00 a set
3. Roadsmart 3s - about $305.00 a set, less $40.00 rebate now available = $265.00 a set.
Checked my mileage log:
Road 5 GTs - no data
PR4 GTs - 7,500 miles out of the set
Roadsmart 3s - 5,500 miles out of the rear, 6,000 miles out of the front, call it 5,750 miles average
So...…
the RS3 gets 77% of the mileage the PR4 GT gets, but now cost 78% of what the Michelin cost.
Shit - these tire marketing peeps have this crap figured out pretty good.
I'd like to leave on the big trip in June on a fresh set of PR4s
I should be OK with the RS3s until then.
Dun-flop it is, I guess......

FWIW, I've got aboot 30K darksided miles and, running PR2 fronts, haven't had any unusual front wear. That's a mix of riding slab cross-country and riding up the side of a mountain at EOM.

I ran a car tire for 40k miles, never noticed any detrimental front tire wear, but riding style and air pressures can affect this. A guy I know shreds front tires due to his style, it was a mystery at first. Me, I pick a front that works, and a rear that works (for me), and I almost always mix brands. The other thing I don't do is use Yamaha's 36 psi recommendation for the front.... 40 minimum.
Judging tire mileage is dependent on the user, thus one can only make generalities based on others' opinions, you have to try tires yourself. As for the RS3's, I ran 2 sets (not yet to the end) my opinion is they should last a touch longer than PR4's due to the slightly harder compounds. Depends on your right wrist. However, I wouldn't push them hard in the cooler and wetter conditions, great tires for summer IMHO. Decent neutral handling, uniform wear, but I tend to like a little more grip over longevity, so for me personally, I'm not planning to buy any more.
I'll wait for more feedback on the Road 5's for longevity, just sitting here gathering intel..... so far nothing would compel me to buy any, especially for what they're asking for them. I have heard the tread depth is deeper than others, but that means little if the compounds are softer.
