Dash Shelf Adjistment

On the recommendation of a favorite uncle, I had an SE Cathey (Brydenscot) dash shelf on my 2014.

Having things up high was heaven. Constantly worrying about dash (or dash mounted item) contact with the shield was not heaven. Just getting the dash high/forward enough to clear the turn signal indicator lights brought it within a hair of shield contact when the shield was down and the bike was at speed. Despite careful adjustment, it was a pain.

Those of you that run an fjr dash shelf, do you write off the signal indicators, just run an OEM shield, deal with the contact, or what? I miss my dash, and am considering putting it on the 18, but I sure don’t miss dancing between leaving a signal on and scratching a windscreen.

I honestly just deal with the contact... mine only contacts on the wind shield supports and it's rather minor IMO.

I just installed one on a Gen3 at Christmas, took the time to finagle so it wouldn't contact the windshield.. i.e., where the center front screw goes.... got it almost perfect before tightening it up..... I did bend the front support down in the middle (curved it a bit) which makes the shelf go forward a hair... put 1/8" washers under you windshield drive, lift it up... more if you want. What I did not check was the indicator lights... 'spose you can make longer rear support brackets too to raise the rear... they could use a little hockey stick shape to clear....

My original windshield had a few lines scored by the GPS/iPhone. I didn't worry about it, and usually snugged the windshield down to reduce the GPS/iPhone from vibrating. Just snug; not tight. We'll see how it works with the big Vstream that got installed Sunday evening.

As for turn indicators, you must be taller than me. I can just barely see the turn signals under the shelf's edge.

Keeps it visible, so I can check it whenever I've forgotten where I'm going. Happens a lot.

Excellent. Which vstream did you perpetrate, 20308 or 20309?

20309, the big boy. I get chilled easily -- thin-blooded southern boy -- and wanted to see how it would protect during the wintertime. That, coupled with knuckle guards and a heated seat, should do me fine until springtime. Thinking about getting a smoked shortie 20307 for summer.

How's the V stream vs stock for pressure and a quiet bubble?

I’ve been planning to enlarge the cut-out circle so that I can see the turn indicators for 6 months..I figure a french curve will come in handy. I have the Yamaha touring screen and I have no issues with my (small) garmin gps unit touching the screen..

The 20307 was a joke, for me. Great for around town, just not suitable for distance, for me. Pretty close to the performance of the original Yamaha screen. The 20308 is very good, but leaves me with buffeting at the top of my helmet. Ever so slightly too short, for me. But I have helis and I’m on a custom seat. The 20309 is like a clown shoe. It has big shoulders, or ears, where it flares wide at the top, with cutouts where it narrows in the middle. The problem with the 20309 is that the shield is too long to be able to support that wide part at the top. The cutouts in the middle make the top wag and wobble incessantly on the road.

Besides Cee Bailey, the Yamaha touring screen is the best overall screen I’ve found. The 20308 is close, probably almost even, if I were a little shorter or sitting a little lower.

If my winter Cee Bailey ever wears out, I suspect I’ll get another 20309 and just keep it down to minimize the craziness at the top.

The aerodynamics on the Gen III+ are completely different. I find it has much more favorable air flow for warm season riding. Also, the scoop in the front eliminates the negative pocket with the screen all the way up. Especially good with a larger aftermarket screen. I run the stock screen for warm riding and switch to a large Cee Baileys for cooler weather.

My big boy VStream wobbles at high speed, too, but I don’t do as much of that (80 mph) with a new job and a new commute route.

It does produce a nice quiet bubble for me, and I can tweak it down an inch or so to get airflow directly to the helmet vents.

Hand guards came off immediately, because they hit the screen at handlebar full swing. The hand guards were ugly, and only intended for winter use anyway.

Because it’s so big, it isn’t the best for summertime, but it’s not so bad that I will swap it out each season.

I had a big boy V-Stream as well..... shimming it up to let more air under the front fixed the wobbly top edge. I then put two shims under the front and one at the rear..... all was kool.
I did not have the dash shelf, I made my own. It now (new owner) has a dash shelf and it is close when windshield fully down.... so he just raises it a tad to avoid that contact.

I have the Cateye shelf on my 06.
Having brought home the new 18 last night, i dont see a way to transfer the shelf to the new bike.
There is no upper mount point on the 18.

Can someone post a picture of their shelf on a 16 up?
Also, how it is mounted?

There was a Gen3 shelf available....... with a little re-engineering you might be able to transfer the Gen2 shelf..... Gen2 mounted with two arms at the ends of the shelf. Gen 3 has two small arms that attach to the inner instrument panel screws... you would have to make those little arms and attach them to the shelf.
The unknown is... does the windshield contour match... if not, you might be SOL.
I maybe might have an instruction sheet, hafta check my "collection" to see if I tossed it.

I presume the gen 3 (13 to 15) are the same mounting points on the 16 up?

Finally got the gen 3 dash shelf in and installed, but the thing slants down towards the rider. I have it just barely clearing the windscreen.

Did I screw the install some way or do your gen 3 shelves tilt down? Its like the 2 supports are too short.

My gen 3 shelf slightly slants towards the rider. It annoys me a bit, but not enough to have made new supports yet.

My gen 3 shelf is level. Make sure the shelf nose piece is pulled down almost to the end of the FJR plastic nose piece. Loosen the upper mounting screws a little and the entire assembly (shelf and mounting tabs) becomes floppy and easily manipulated to be flat.
