I don't know how many of you struggle with disconnecting the fuel tank gas line coupling when servicing your FJR. I know my fingers have a tough time getting the buttons to disengage the locking mechanism. I was planning on making some sort of tool that would help getting the locking mechanism on the fuel line to disengage and I have come up with this inexpensive fix.

I was browsing in Princess Auto (Canadian equivalent to Harbor Freight) and came across this cheap vise clamp...



I saw a possibility into modifying this so I spent the $20 CAD and took it home. In the shop I took my air die grinder and ground off the rivets for the clamping pads and drove out the pin holding the pads with a drift punch...



I then took my cut off grinder and ground some of the arm away to fit the size of the buttons on the fuel line coupler...



I tested it on my FJR and also on my WR450F dirt bike. the coupler on the dirt bike is even more stubborn than the FJR and the tool seems to work fairly well. For $20 in materials and 15 minutes in the shop I think it was worth the effort.

Which one is the final tool?

Great idea 'fitter. A set of large hog ring pliers also works on more stubborn ones.

Good deal. I long ago did something similar with 2 small blocks of steel and Channel Lock pliers. Works fine.

And kudos on the grinder guard. On time, long ago, in an iron foundry, I saw a small 4" grinding wheel explode. Half of it went through an 8 ft florescent light fixture, through 8" of insulation and then through the metal roof. The other half slashed the man open about 5" left of his nut sack opening the major blood vessel in his left leg. He would have bled out right there on the shop floor had we not known where the pressure point is from our first aid training.

The guy that made it.

I use these for a lot of things including that fuel fitting..... should really put a stop in so the jaws don't squeeze too tight, but they work as is. Haven't seen them sold separately, but as a set of 3 long needle nose pliers at Harbor Fright, Princess Auto, etc.

Heat shrink a cut-off zip tie to each side. Works great.

Maybe just me but I never found it so difficult that I felt the need for a special tool...

Great ideas, every time I've taken the tank off I cussed the fitting. My fingers are thick enough that they don't get to the buttons easily.

Think it's a good idea, I know I've cussed.
