1-day ride in ‘sconsin
I lost a good friend and riding buddy to cancer just before Christmas of ‘16. 49 years old. Shark was one of a kind. Big Rush fan. So another mutual friend, Tim, and I like to find Rush-related items along the way during road trips. Tim knew of an appropriate spot in Wisconsin so we scheduled a Saturday to bag it along with some other stops.
A 3-hr ride from DM puts me in Dubuque to meet up with Tim. First stop is in Mineral Point WI at Brewery Creek for lunch and to admire the beautiful bar back.
The building must be over 150 years old and has rooms for rent upstairs.
See the adze marks in the ceiling beams?
Great food, big crowd for lunch and to-die-for coconut macaroon pie.
Just up the road is our destination. We have to pull over on the shoulder of 4-lane Highway 151 to set up the tripod and get this tribute to the tune YYZ from the Moving Pictures album.
YYZ is the airport code for Rush’s hometown of Toronto and the band enjoyed seeing it pop up on tour itineraries as it indicated the tour was drawing to a close.
We had another stop further east, but our route took us through New Glarus, so we stopped for a look around the brewery. And I picked up a 6 of Totally Naked for later Saturday night.
Just in case you’re wondering how far it is from you to New Glarus:
On to Janesville to bag a few photos for me. Over the years I’ve sought out towns with “Craig” in the name. I’ve bagged IA, NE, MO, CO, OK, AR, VA, and WV. AK is on the list (and if you know of others, lemme know). And in Janesville there is Craig High School.
I’m thinking of adapting this design for the entry of my next house.
Time to turn for home. One of the two-lanes is marked closed, but at the barriers we could see the opposite barriers across a quarter mile of pristine new pavement. So somehow the bikes found themselves on the other side of the barriers, and off we went.
Next stop was the Council Hill general store just across the border in Illinois. It’s a cool place with a bar that works on the honor system, jam sessions, an old dairy barn converted to a concert venue, and a definite hippie vibe.
Heating and cooling systems:
With the sun dropping low, we made our last stop in New Diggings WI, a town primarily known for the two rustic bars across the street from each other. Both have enough character to entertain you all night.
I’d like to be there sometime when they add a new autographed bra to the collection.
We arrive back in Dubuque just as the last bit of dusk disappears. Back at Tim’s we break out the New Glarus brews and relive the day.
Good times. Good friends. Good riding. Ride on, Shark. YYZ

Nice ride report and great pictures. Thanks for sharing!
Searching for roads paved with Asphalt, unless I am riding the mighty DR650 bushpig.

You find "Craig" towns?!?! Very cool! And I noticed the interior photo of Council Hill Station was solely women. You two guys enjoyed yourselves there, I'll bet.

Nice ride report and pics! Never thought to find towns with my name in them. Probably because Harald towns will be few and far between unless I was in Europe maybe. But I'm gonna see if I can Google up any........

Re: 1-day ride in ‘sconsin
It's gonna be a Harley ride and not a FJR ride to get to all towns with Harald in their name.
There's zero towns that match.
So I guess I just stay on the couch and drink beer.

Great ride report. Did you get a chance to ride WI 171 west of Boaz?

49 is way to young, sorry for your loss but you are keeping him alive in your rides and reports. Good stuff Craig.

So we happened to notice the high ratio of females as well. Especially when a mini-tour bus pulled up and discharged about another dozen. Turns out Council Hill is on the route taken by several wine tours and is a regular stop. JSNS.Uncle Hud wrote:You find "Craig" towns?!?! Very cool! Ran across this excellent Ride Report yet again, and thought Google and I might lend you a hand.CraigRegs wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 10:58 pmOver the years I’ve sought out towns with “Craig” in the name. Scotland
Craig, Angus (Perhaps this will help?)
United States
Craig, Alaska, a city
Craig (ghost town), Butte County, California, a former settlement
Craig, Modoc County, California, a former settlement
Craig, Indiana, an unincorporated place
Craig, Montana, an unincorporated place
Craig, Ohio, an unincorporated place
Not sure if there are landmarks in the unincorporated places or 'former settlements'.

Lookie here what I found Craig. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig,_California
Okay it isn't really a town anymore but it is only 40 minutes from my house. Sounds like you need to return west this next year and we can explore what's left it after a nice ride in the hills.

Texas being so big, if you can dream it, there's probably a spot on the map.Bugnatr wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 4:32 pm Lookie here what I found Craig. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig,_California

You know, for when your cabin fever sets in and you need to find your way south. I know of some good BBQ in Tyler right near there.
There's more than one of them!
