I have a 3100 mile trek planned for next weekend, and even though we aren't up in the 90's yet, having a ready source of water on the fly never hurts. I used a Camelbak in my tank bag last year for the trip to Yosemite and the 50cc, but in that 104 degree Arizona oven it didn't take long for it to get luke warm and it was 4 hours between fuel stops and fresh ice. I met fjrferrier at Nafo 2016 in Montrose and thought her hydration rig was pretty slick. Simple, sturdy, and quite effective. So began my quest to borrow her idea. I msg'd her and she told me what she used, turns out it was a landscape drainage connection box. A brief search on Amazon and one was on it's way to my doorstep.




So this is what I started the morning out with. First order of business is to trim the unnecessary T connection off.









The hole will be oriented inward toward the bike. With the cooler jug in place, it's not seen.






A brief search around the shed and I find this piece of 16 gauge cee purlin left over from a previous project. Just the ticket.





A few minutes of drilling, and I have some mounting holes. I added the slot to allow for the foot peg housing to recess up into the plate when the rubber insert is removed. I didn't show it here, but I added a couple more holes to secure the flower pot to the plate








I added some stainless furniture leg sliders to minimize the cooler jug's loose fit.





I added a 1/4" drain hole near the bottom and finished it off with some satin black automotive paint.





Close enough for this ole Texican Redneck.

That's redneck engineering right there, good job Craig. I have to do something like that for my trip this summer.... what did you use for hose/bite valve? I'll study Ms. Farrier's in a coupla weeks too.
PS Garauld has a ready made one too.

I'm using the bite valve off of my Camelbak. They sell extra quick connect kits and tubing. I do like Gary's setup

Based on the last two Saturdays that I've sat outside at my son't soccer games, I'm thinking this isn't really going to be that huge of an issue for you. But, you do still need to stay hydrated no matter the weather. Nice job, looks very good.

Well, the "in" plumbing is set...do you have a plan for the "out"?

That's usually more of a problem for me. I could make great time if I didn't have to stop every 400 miles whether I need fuel or not. Just saying.

BTW, fine craftsmanship there. Nice job.

Out isn't a problem in 104F heat, it just comes out of your skin. Next weekend though, maybe a catheter down the pant leg draining onto the street would do it.

The out plumbing hasn't been an issue for me so far. I did around 20k last year and 14k in 2016 carrying the Camelbak in the my tank bag and have never had to make an unplanned bio stop. I chalked it up to the dehydrating process in the 75+ mph blast furnace being in equalibrium with the amount of hydration I was offsetting it with. I've had heat cramps after laying down at the end of a long heat filled day of riding and was forced to realize the importance of hydration. To quote Mr Pants, when I ride, I ride

I sure can't fault that statement, but I am traveling some remote nether regions of south and west Texas afterall, so planning for such events like this can be challenging. But if I do run across some suitable pie activities, rest assured the photo porn will ensue!

I tend not to over hydrate. For some reason I seem know when I need to, and forget about it when I don't. Like you say, temps aren't going to be in the hot zone this time of year for this trip, but I decided a while back that I'm not going to launch on long trips anymore without water onboard. I carry energy bars, licorice, fireballs, and things like that to keep the blood sugar going too.

I drink coffee a lot, coffee and beer you only rent as they are diuretics. When I built the shop in some very hot weather, drank nothing but water for 3 weeks and a fair amount of it... hardly had to pee either. Good chit that water.
