The Knuckle Visors are large plastic pieces which are color match painted and go over the mirrors . In theory, the large size of the guard and an airfoil at the bottom will divert air around the hands. Someone would have to convince me that they really work and work well enough that a big bucket of large denomination bills is worth it to buy them.

The V-Strom hand guards are simple mold injected black plastic pieces which surrounds the hand right at the grip. Garauld makes a little air foil which goes on the bottom edge of the Strom guards to increase effective. Over 150k miles of personal experience shows that the Strom guards and Garauld's air foil work well.

^^^^ If us Cranky Yankees didn't ride in the cold we wouldn't ride at all. In the summer it is common for the early morning rides to start in the low 50's. Hand guards and heated grips and the staples of life for Yankee Freezer riding. We have had a number of Ride To The Rock and NERDS rides start in the teens and low twenty's.

CollingsBob probably sees our riding temperatures as riding in the tropics.

I did spend my high school years in Nova Scotia, so for those years I was a blue noser..I’ll be back home for 4 days in May, it’ll be good to see some old friends there.
My kid sister is in Connecticut, so I’m a little familiar with the temps in the northeast..you get more snow in New Hampshire, but it gets colder here in Manitoba ( winter lows to -45 without the windchill are common). for longer periods and our winter is easily 4-6 weeks longer

I found knuckle visors on eBay for a lot less..

Sure spoil my fun. It used to be you could only get those (in North America at least) in the 2013 colour, which everybody knows is the slowest colour, so why would you want them.... I did try a set..... save yer money.

I have the tall V-Stream, liked it better than the middle version, mounted it with two 1/8 plastic washers under the front windshield motor bracket, one washer on the upper one (and I mean the bracket not between the windshield and the bracket). This slightly tilts the V-Stream back and gave a little more range to comfort zone and less vibration at the top of the shield. I can run it all the way down and get good air or up halfway if I want more lower airflow, arms only get slightly damp if it rains as long as you're moving......

Barkbuster also makes a semi-hard set of fabric-ish handguards that are easy to mount on and off, very versatile... madmudder has a set, look good.

Just fat and didn't look all that perty, and didn't really do much to block much wind/water.

...functionality is crucial. I found a pair on the island of Jersey, off the coast of the U.K at a reasonable price but if they function poorly then either Barbuster or Suzuki units it is..

I've had the BarkBusters installed on my bike for more than 2 years. The V-Strom guards don't hold a candle to how effective they are. Years ago I tried the V-Strom on my right handlebar because it bolted on easily, however the left handlebar does not have a clutch reservoir to mount one to, so I had a built in comparison for a few winter months. Honestly, I could not tell any difference in the protection between my right hand, or the lack thereof for my left. They were still in the wind, cold and wet. With the BarkBusters it has a much larger envelope of coverage. As long as I am moving forward my hands stay dry, and I can now feel the benefits of the bike's grip warmers. During the hot summer rides it keeps the oven wind blast off the hands too. Much more comfortable in my opinion.

Brodie, thanks for that review...I'm glad to know it wasn't just my imagination, AND I'm glad to hear of a suitable replacement.

A few more images of the BarkBuster option…









They use the threaded bar end to mount a short forward facing plate to add some structure, and level. The other end just straps on around the handlebar. They are flexible enough to accommodate a barn door windshield at full steering lock, yet will not scratch the tank. The generic hardware could be a little better fit, and I did have to find longer mounting screws, but it all fit up pretty well.
