Flashing Cruise Light

2013 model.
Jumped on the bike yesterday and was disappointed that my cruise failed to work, dash light just flashed when I went to engage and would not "set".
The last time I rode I got caught in a heavy rain shower and don't think I used the cruise until yesterday so my first conclusion was this rain shower got something wet.
I stopped and turn the key on and off but no change, oh well. I took off and ran a tank full out periododically checking/pushing the cruise button with no change. I stopped to refill and when I reset the odometer surprisingly my cruise began to work after I got back on the road.
I doubt very much that resting the odometer fixed it but thought I run this past you guys.
Writing it off to damp connections? (which I would like to prevent again)

Can you check for error codes logged on the 2013 model like you could on previous generations?

Maybe, have to check the manual.

Sticking rear brake pedal? If the light switch is engaged it won't allow the cruise to turn on.

That's a good thought.
I do have a habit of putting my foot under the pedal and checking that but I do need to look at that switch now that you mention it.
Could have been the issue, thanks.

I have used the FSM Diag codes to troubleshoot. I can send details when I get home. My issue was a gunked up rear brake spring. The brake lights would go out but the cruise wouldn't engage. It's only millimeters between the two contacts operating.

Yep, check for sticking brake pedal, grease it up anyway, it needs it.
Check also ABS sensors, particularly rear wheel. Remove it and if you see any white corrosion (aluminum), clean it up and smear a little silicone grease on the plastic adapter to help prevent future corrosion.
I'm betting on the sticky brake pedal.

I lubed the brake switch but didn't look at the ABS sensor. Tomorrow I'll get to that.
Today it did the same thing, been dry for days, it started flashing but after I've been riding a while and had been using the cruise. I made a stop and when I was back on it started flashing when I went to engage.
I worked the brakes both front and rear then I stopped and checked to see if the brake was sticking, it wasn't. Turned the key off and back on, then it started to work again.....?

I just helped a friend install a SpeedoHealer on his '16, and we have the cruise light flashing (cannot engage). We do not yet have an OBD2 setup to check diagnostic codes, but we essentially tapped into the rear wheel sensor circuit, and that has set an error code..... On prior models you can access the error codes on the main display, as they do not have OBD2.
Simultaneously hold the TCS and RESET buttons, then turn ignition on, continue to hold those buttons for 8 seconds and DIAG icon will display in the right meter. Cycle through the error codes by pressing TCS (increasing) or RESET (decreasing) for one second. If you find error code 90 or 91, this is cruise errors where the ECU is not receiving normal signals..... which can be wheel sensor issues, but there is a whole list of things to check (basically, connections).
Note, the Gen3 use signals from BOTH wheel sensors for ABS and cruise. Both signals go through the ABS ECU first, then feed to the main ECU. Code 69 is front wheel sensor, code 42 is for rear wheel sensor...... see if you have any of those error codes.
Is the ABS light on while riding and trying to engage with a flashing cruise lamp?

Might want to check / clean the contacts on the front brake lever switch. Iirc this same issue popped up on someone else's bike some time back and that was their fix.

I'll have some time today to investigate thanks for the suggestions.
The ABS light does not flash, everything appears normal until I engage the cruise then only the cruise engagement lamp flashes, "SET" lamp never comes on.

I was thinking if either the brake or clutch switches weren't closed, the cruise light wouldn't flash, it just wouldn't engage... but you bring up a good point, there may be a quirk that causes flashing. I have heard of intermittent switches (I think one of them is a dual switch maybe the brake lever switch), which may need a slight tweak to ensure the plungers are engaging/not engaging depending on lever position.

Rear ABS sensor had a minor bit white discoloration to the housing. Sensor was clean. Front ABS looked new and had a type of grease on it.
Both brake switches were clean.
Rear switch cable and ABS sensor cable was run between frame and ABS hyd metal lines. A tight fit but insulation wasn't cut. Rerouted these two behind metal lines
ABS plug had a little dirt inside connector, contacts looked good.
Everything including brake pedal pivot was cleaned, lubed and sealed well. (brake pedal pivot had been greased before.)
Diagnostic procedure, IF an error existed would I get an "ERR" message or just a number?
I saw DIA and DATA with numbers out beside almost all of them.
Not sure what I'm looking for but I didn't see 91 or 92.
Thought I might as well look at the handle bar switch assy and see what the push button and wiring looks like.

If your c/c is still acting up, you might try unplugging the wire connections to the front brake lever switch and put a temporary paper clip bridge between them. It is a normally closed contact with little current draw across it so it can get crudded up. My son's Gen I brake switch looked ok, but the contacts weren't actually making good contact. We disassembled the switch and scraped the contacts with a razor knife then the switch started working again.

I suspect the rear switch more than the front but I'll keep this in mind.
I noticed it doesn't take much touch on the rear pedal for the switch to engage. I think I'll go back and lengthen the stroke. I'm usually on the front brake before the rear anyway.
I'm wondering IF the brake is on when the cruise is engaged, will it reset without the key being turned on and off??

Follow instructions above to get in Diag Mode. Go to Code 82, this is the Cruise Control Cancel circuit. It should say OFF. If it says ON start playing with clutch lever, brakes, etc.

Code 80 checks the RES+ button and 81 is for SET-. Check Code 61 to see if an error was caught, if so tell us what code(s).

This is why I mentioned cleaning the pivot earlier. If the pivot is bummed up it holds the brake pedal slightly engaged. Well, the brake light switch is attached to it so probably "slightly engaged" as well.
If you adjusted the pedal hight recently I'd say this is your culprit. I forgot to reset the switch tension when I adjusted mine and had now cc on the way to work the next day.
Even if it's not the cause, it's too easy to slacken the switch and go for a ride.

This may have been the issue even though it's never done it before.
The brake light would come on before the brake pedal was feeling resistance. I lenghten the stroke so it comes on when actual brake is being applied.
Not 100% sure but we'll see.
Still curious about a reset of the key if the brake light switch is on when cruise is engaged.

I think the cruise resets once both brake switches are set. My front lever got sticky on the way out to yfo and would prevent the cruise from re-engaging, but a push to reset the lever position while under way and the cruise would go back to working again.
