Understand. Will continue to use my repurposed soft-sided cooler. It is waterproof, and connects to straps I run under the pillion seat.

I think it looks very nice. The lines or your smuggler blend well with the lines of the bike.

I was thinking that taking your approach would allow a seat building to shift the bucket of the riding seat much farther back to give long legged riders a little more leg room. Then custom build the smuggler around the custom seat. I suppose that is what you did. But doing that "mass production" would be challenging - nearly everyone has a custom seat and no two are exactly identical.

Senor Pants, the Seat Concepts replacement cover creates a cup almost at the back of the pilot seat. The stock seat made me slowly slide forward, and would stretch and strain my manly parts after a few hours. The Seat Concepts plants my ass firmly at the seam between pilot and pillion, and is super comfy because of that.

PS: I got the non-skid fabric. Doesn't interfere with upper-body lean, but you have to lift off the seat to slide your butt around.

As I said earlier, the subject of this thread is gorgeous, and I'm sorry it won't be going into limited production.

Going to revive this thread because I'm going to refit this smuggler to my new to me 2016. My 2013 had a Givi rack and the 16 has the stock rack. I'm going to have to modify the back of the box and lid to make it fit.

The back of the box needs to be cut back, I did that yesterday but it's too cold to do much with it today.



Once I fill the back in and get it smoothed out I'll make the lid or modify the original one.

Hey, kieefjr, would you be interested in making one from scratch, and if so, how much money would you need to make it happen? I'm willing to bet you'd have several requests from our buddies around here.

I might even be convinced to ride up yonder and pick it up ... routing through Newfound Gap, of course.

Thanks for vote of confidence but it would be cheaper to find one from Corbin. This is very time consuming and mine is definitely not as perfect as Corbins.
The first one I made for my 05 model year I designed and built during recovery of knee surgery, the current one I did in the winter.
It’s messy, time consuming and dusty work.
Did I mention time consuming?
It doesn’t help being meticulous and anal.

This little mod I’m doing has taken up two days already and I just finished, well hopefully finished the glass work on the box, haven’t started on the lid because that will be last.

I once this glass hardens I’ll grind and sand and might have to add more glass.
Then Bondo is applied and more harden time.
Sand and repeat the process maybe again or three times. Then filler putty sand and paint.

Still not sure how well bonded this mod will be, the seam might crack under vibration?

Then start on the lid.
So I don’t mean to be rude but no I’d rather not.

Glass work came out good and strong.
Set it in place on the bike and plenty of clearance and looks even with a correct gap between the the rack and box.
Sanding the rough edges a roughened up the surface for bondo.

Back when I owned a boat and water skis I did some fiberglassing.

I don't miss it.

Got the bondo and putty work done. Started on lid.

Nice work. Looking forward to seeing the finished product installed on the bike.

I am also waiting to see the final product. Unfortunately the photos from the start of this post no longer show up so this finished product will be like a new unveiling.

Getting pretty close.
Adding paint only enhances the defects so it’s putty, sand, paint, repeat.
I cut the back off the old lid instead of making a new one.
