Paint source?

Post by KMW »

Does anyone have a favorite source for OEM color paint? I picked up a Shad top case, and I'm building a rear tail rack that I can easily mount it on and off and still have the bike look good when it's off. Once I have it all worked out, I want to color match my tail rack. I also want to color match the silver band around the sides of the Shad box.

My bike is a '14, so I'd be looking at the Deep Metallic Red. From what I've found so far it seems to be a three part paint, with base, top, and clear coats.

I found ColoRite, and Touch Up Direct. Any better or different suggestions? Anyplace with better prices?

Cool. I'll look him up when I'm ready then.

I got the tail rack done enough tonight to be able to bolt it on. Still need to do some fine finishing on it though. I'll make a thread for it when I finish it.

Here's a pic of my Shad mounted. What I plan to do is paint the silver part red. I think it will look made for the bike then.

Might I suggest an alternate scheme..... tank trim, movable fairing panel, front nose piece and silver Shad band all done in black carbon fiber. Shad top in red, silver side panels on bike in red (you can order red panels from Yamaha). There is a thread on FJRForum somewhere that might give you an idea of how that might look.

So what are you planning on covering with it Ray? I'd like cover some things on the new bike.

I'll chime in for RedFishHunter: If you can't find the right paint, just go to the lipstick counter at Dillard's and get you some "Hooker Lips Red." That should match just fine!

I have a different scheme to contend with..... what compliments root beer. I have silver trim on the tank, but gold goes with root beer, so I have army gold CF..... it's really some kind of grayish silverish goldish.... I'll do the tank trim and see what it looks like. If OK, I'll do the side chrome trim on the bags, silver trim on fairings (yours may be black), and the nose piece. My movable side fairing pieces are color-matched root beer along with the side panels, so I leave those alone....... you really have to look at photos of your own bike and try to imagine what will look good.

FWIW, I have bought most of my paint from Colorrite with mixed results on the color matching. They are expensive too. As I mentioned on the other board, I suggest taking a part of your FJR and drive around the local mall parking lot to find a car having a close color match. When found, take note of the model and go to your local dealer or auto parts store for touchup paint. For larger areas, you are now into the BC/CC arena and need to buy either online or at your local auto paint store. The 2014 red is a multi-coat process: gray primer, silver base, red midcoat and clear topcoat. The new red Toyota 4Runners are very close in color match.

Gary, maybe you know, if you take the paint code from the label under the rear seat...... can you get paint from an automotive paint supplier? OR is that just a code to be used as a part number suffix when ordering coloured parts?

I don't believe there is a correlation between the Yamaha code and any automotive paint codes. FWIW, I gave up trying to get a good match on Cobalt Blue using Colorrite paint. Kia Deep Ocean Blue is a very close match and was selected using the scanner at my local auto paint store - that is what I spray. The Kia color code is 6K - does that match anyone's seat code? I doubt it.

OK, good info..... I think I'll just take my root beer brown side panel to a local place and get it scanned. I haven't seen anything that would be a good match.
