Pelican Tag-Storge-Brake Light Box

Post by wpbfjr »

one of our forum members requested i add a how-to for my storage box license plate holder brake light box.

Image

i started with the Pelican 1120 box. the existing upper mounting holes for the factory plate holder are my starting mounting point. waterproof and lockable are strong pluses.

Image

some set your own combination locks are here, please ensure the shank diameter does not exceed the locking tabs provided by pelican.

Image

in this image you can see the hex button-head cap screws and flat aluminum stock i used to mount the box to the factory tail fender. i presumed this configuration would:
a) not be a tool normally carried by a thief, and
b) give support and add resistance should someone try to just take the box off the bike.

Image

secured with nylon locking nuts, dremmeling off the exposed threads inside the box finishes the fasteners. as you see, alignment is not my strong suit. but, 8 years and not fallen off yet.

Image

the black metal license plate frame is solid, affordable, and easy to grind down if needed to ensure the serial numbers on the official stickers are visible in case your local LEO is looking for things to gig you for.

Image

i sealed all mounting holes and wiring holes with Silicone Adhesive Sealant.

Image

the LED plate lights derive power from the now abandoned factory license plate wiring harness.

Image

i chose the BackOff Brake Light Module. as you see, it is a perfect fit for the available space. possibly the Hyperlights would use the space just as efficiently, your call. either system gives you full, simple to understand wiring instructions for installation.

Image

inside, i used foam padding for the box and to hide the wiring. WARNING: over time, heat eats the foam, plus anything bouncing around (padlock in my case) also destroys the foam.

the installation should be "fire and forget", unless you move states (i did), or your state updates its plate design.

PM me if interested in a security feature i'd rather not post openly.
