Garmin 665 power cable question

Post by jsaul53 »

The Garmin Zumo 660 and 665 Motorcycle Cradle comes with Integrated Power Cable but they are really long. Has anyone come up with a way to keep them organized or shortening them? I am doing some wiring clean up before adding a Powerlet Termin-8 Easier Than A Fuseblock and found my current cables that I had wrapped around and velcro strapped them had some wear on them that may have caused the most recent fuse to be blown.

Long story short I would like shorter cables and wanted to see if anyone has shortened them or came up with an alternative. I read on a post that some people with other bikes take the excessively long cables and stow in the headlight but do not think this is a good option.

I just coiled mine up and put it between the tank and heat shield. Been like that for years. I tied the coil together so it doesn't just flop around. Two inches of electrical tape works just fine to hold the coil in place.

Almost like AJ's suggestion ... I coiled mine up and used a tie wrap then I put the coil over the ram ball mount under the GPS

Not sure which power cable you are using. If it is one with a cigarette type plug, just cutting and shortening the the cable usually is not a good option. It usually has usb wiring from the plug to the unit. Wiring in a shorter usb cable to a 12v to usb can work but Garmin has wired some units to defeat this. Bottom line it isn't as simple as it looks. Ran into all of this trying to wire up my Nuvi. Garmin is pretty much no help at all. They just want you to use their cable but with a little hunting you can find vehicle power cables to all of their products.
It is NOT the destination. It is the RIDE getting there!

Mine are coiled up in the tool tray. When I want to use ear buds I just run it between the seat and the tank, its right there where you need it. When I spend alot of time on slab I prefer ear buds to my scala speakers to protect my ears from wind noise. I love to being able to make that choice.

Coiled up and put under tank. looks good.

My farkling is almost done for now..........
Added LR4 LED lights using Wynnpro brackets added skene IQ 175 dimmer
Finally hooked up heated seat (was hard to cut hole in Laam seat to put the switch on it)
brake light flasher
Added breakaway over heated grips works like a charm had to work around the casing for the oem heated grips and the handguards I have on it
Added the techspec Pannier Covers Snake Skin
"Stiffy Kit" offered by Garauld
Cleaned up all the wiring used the powerlet-termin-8-easier-than-a-fuseblock and carefully routed wires
Temporary put stock windshield on which will be replaced by touring for distance and the cal-sci smoke shorty when local

I have on order a penske shock to compliment the ak20 front I did some time ago.

This is not an addiction.................

Time to ride.
