My rear fender was chopped when I bought it and ordered an oem replacement. Has anyone replaced one before and how did you handle the items that are riveted in? I know I can drill them out but wanted to see what options some of you have come up with. They did not design this to be replaced very easily. Special screws around the seat lock as well as those rivets.....

I've seen a couple of rear fender extensions fashioned from a black rectangular trash can and a lot of creativity with a knife (or some other cutting tool of your choice, probably not a torch ). The results were actually quite good. I would expect the work to be less than replacing the bobbed OEM fender. Speaking of a torch, after this kind of plastic cutting is done, a very, very light touching of the cuts with a propane torch rounds the edges and smooths everything out quite nice.

I haven't looked to see what size rivets you're talking about, but usually a decent rivet gun and a box of pop rivets are available at a parts store for a song. They are pretty easy to install and last well. They come in steel and aluminum varieties. If you want longevity, I'd go with aluminum because steel will rust. Stainless are available, but expensive.

If you have friends in an aircraft shop, you could have then buck some cherry rivets in. Those would be stronger and have better corrosion protection.

If you need ¼" rivets, they are available at most parts stores, but the rivet gun is more expensive. Might be better to see if a local auto shop would do it for you as you might be money ahead over buying the bigger gun.

I too am into this replacement.... A lot of work to get back to stock!!! Probably only took previous owner 5 mins to chop!! The new fender seems to need a reflector on the end of the fender too and I don't see it on the parts list!!!

My fender was bobbed as well when I bought my bike. I have taken a different route to get a bit more protection.
