New FJR Owner in California

Post by Bergmen »

I have admired the FJR since it's introduction in the States in late 2002. I finally made the jump last November by getting a new 2014 FJR1300A. Here I am just checking it out at the dealer in Lakeport before heading home (a 45 minute ride in the country):

Suited up and ready to roll:

I have about 2,000+ miles on it (dodging rain storms here and there) and have just completed the first phase of a mounting deck over the passenger seat for a couple of new Givi Trekker trunks (33 & 46 liter):

This weekend I disassemble, round off some sharp edges and remove the panels on the Givis. I will have the bracketry powder coated in semi-gloss black and the metal panels Candy Red to match the FJR.

We live in Ukiah. We have a small 3 acre farm on Boonville Road. This is motorcycling heaven, nothing but twisties north and west of us.

Yes, weather is typically excellent although this has been a very dry winter (good riding weather though).

How about a picture of the mounting system under the seat for that trunk? Looks like a pretty neat idea if you can pull the seat relatively quickly.

And how's Hopland Road looking this spring? It was in very rough shape last time I went that way.

Here is a picture of the set up just getting ready to drill the lower side holes:

The deck (when fully installed) hovers about 1/4" over the passenger seat. I have to disassembly the mount to remove the passenger seat (two bolts on each lower side and the three at the rear).

Here's an overhead view showing the homemade rack at the rear:

I still have a lot of work to do. I am making sketches of each part so I can do a 3d model (I have my own 3d CAD system) and 2d drawings of each part. I will make these available once I'm finished (hopefully this weekend).

Thanks Dan. Interesting mod, and it comes off clean. Too bad it's not more of a quick release, but it does the job. I often ride with a waterproof duffle on the rear seat and a Givi topcase in back. This looks a lot better.

Enjoy the new scoot. It looks great.

Congratulations Bergmen, your 2014 is Gorgeous. If I would have know that Yamaha was going to come out with that fantastic Red I would have waited a year, instead of buying my 2013.

If you are thinking of Mountain House road out of Hopland over to 128, it's really lousy. Pot holes, broken asphalt, mud, dirt, gravel, major upheavals, etc. I ride that road if I am testing suspension settings, otherwise I'll take any other route.

175 from Hopland over to Lakeport is pretty nice. Several segments have been repaved and it is a nice set of twisties.

Thanks! I have a design for a super simple quick release version rolling around in my head (only a few parts). I think I will noodle it out and see if I can come up with something (I am a Mechanical Engineer by profession).

The Roundup could happen, I'll put it on my calendar. When Yamaha announced the Gen III refinements for the 2013 model year I really perked up. I have been admiring the FJR since it was first introduced but not all of the pieces were in place for me to consider it. With the factory cruise control plus the other goodies I paid attention. The color was not of my liking (my 2003 Concours is Candy Cardinal Red as well as all my riding gear). I told myself that if they introduced a red FJR, that would be it. Once I found out that the 2014 FJR was Candy Red I started shopping and the rest is history.

Okay, I got the design into the 3d CAD system this weekend (no 2d yet). Here is what it looks like (I still have to add the hardware):

Everything is out at the powder coater and will be done in about a week and a half.
