They won't come out too far if you leave the old pads in.....

Now all you need is a stand to hold the wheel.bill lumberg wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 6:32 pm Rode it to pick up a mojolever. And I don’t even own a tire changer.
This is why I'm amazed when I hear people getting their valves checked for $150.fontanaman wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 9:28 pm I also inquired about the cost to check the valves. The response was 9.5 hours of shop time at $138 per hour. With sales tax it comes to $1427.68, before the cost of engine coolant and what ever other parts they find in need of replacement. I guess will be doing this work myself until I sell the beast.
No wonder it’s cheaper. He spelled filter wrong.raYzerman wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 2:12 pm One should be able to get a valve check done in about 4 hours, depending on what other work you're getting done at the time.... stay away from them fontanaman. Here's a recent post from a Canajan in another sandbox...... IMHO reasonable for dealer service.
"My 42,000km (26,600mile) service on my 2020 FJR (completed September 2021), which included valve check, coolant flush, new spark plugs, new air filtre (old one was fine), and brake and clutch fluid change, was $868CAD. The bill broke down as follows: 5.25 hours labour at $120/hour, parts $118, coolant and supplies $27, and tax $93 (13%)."
Not a bad price. Wonder if that is "standard" or if it is based upon actual hours. Valve check doesn't take long if there are no adjustments but as soon as you need to make changes, it adds at least 50% to the time. At 42,000 km, it seems likely that no adjustments were needed. Even without adjustments, getting all that done in 5.25 hours is pretty good.raYzerman wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 2:12 pm One should be able to get a valve check done in about 4 hours, depending on what other work you're getting done at the time.... stay away from them fontanaman. Me too in 5.25 hr or less - if I don't encounter any issues and don't need to replace any shims. We will assume I don't have problems with the valve cover gasket, that I don't drop a bolt somewhere, have problems with the coolant pipe or lose/break push-pins. Not to mention a coolant leak... Always takes longer than expected because I always find other stuff to do while I am in there.gixxerjasen wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:16 pm I can do a check in less than 5.25 hours if I put my mind to it. Geez. Usually still takes me all weekend or two weeks depending on interruptions and me finding something shiny to play with.
To be clear, I can do a check in that amount of time, not an adjustment. I think these dealers are billing for adjustment when many times the adjustment is not necessary and can do the check very quickly.FJRoss wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:37 pmMe too in 5.25 hr or less - if I don't encounter any issues and don't need to replace any shims.gixxerjasen wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:16 pm I can do a check in less than 5.25 hours if I put my mind to it. What was time it took to do the job? I also want to do this job and will be my first on the FJR.Road Runner wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 9:34 pm Removed, cleaned, greased, reinstall the relay arm. First time done on this bike with 31,000 and all was good. Also I was able to get all the center stand and relay arm bolts out without cutting.
Also installed a new Ohlins YA-707.
I didn't time myself and stopped for a long lunch and visit friends. If you are doing the shock and relay arm I would say about 6 hours.Boston wrote: ↑Sat Mar 05, 2022 8:26 amWhat was time it took to do the job? Took me about 7 hours but probably 3 hours of that was time lost due to operater errors. Over 90 minutes wasted on cutting the 2 center stand bolts with a trip to the hardware store for new Sawzall blades. Should be able to do it in 4 hours give or take.Boston wrote: ↑Sat Mar 05, 2022 8:26 amWhat was time it took to do the job?
