My thought is the FJR will be gone in the EU and a redesign isn't going to happen.... the redesign necessary isn't going to make a good business case.... engine displacements are going to get smaller for that market, and redesigning the FJR engine to have VVT, etc. for a unique application (translate small sport tourer market) isn't likely IMHO. Perhaps a resurgence of litre bikes or more applications for the 900 triple, meaning lighter bikes...... meanwhile if the FJR has a year or two left in it for North America, then great.

Jasen - you are correct, in 18 years, it's changed very little. But next year, it has to change a LOT, and I'm afraid the juice simply won't be worth the squeeze.....

I bet we don't see one for 2021. They'll spend a few years doing the R&D and then have a rerelease with much fanfare. 18 years of solid sales of a single model of motorcycle is a big success to walk away from. I'd really be surprised if they aren't looking at the next 18 year platform.

Not a lot of bikes have that kind of longevity without major frequent changes. Interesting how we have several members here with at least two of those bikes, the FJR and the DRZ.

I think it lived that long because their were no changes. More time to recoup investment. Had it required constant change to stay competitive, it likely wouldn't have survived such low unit sales.

I doubt I can wear out this FJR before I need to transition to a smaller bike with a narrower seat for hip issues like petey did.

So let an H-D buddy ride your bike for 15 minutes. I've done it, and the guy came back with his eyes bugging out. Not sure what he'd do with all his H-D gear and tattoos, but ...

I do have an ace up my sleeve to use one day. When the FJR turned 70k miles she told me "About time to replace it right?" So, when the day DOES come to replace it, I'm pulling that one out.

Well, at least Honda is coming out with a "Sport-Touring" bike to help ease the pain of the demise of the FJR.

Spousal Unit encouraged me to buy a new bike on multiple occasions. It started the early 80s when she coaxed be into trading a Honda 550 for a BMW R80 in Santa Cruz. In 2007 she badgered me into getting a BMW R1200RT. I resisted to the point that the sales guy in Tacoma said he had seen guys begging their wives to let them buy a bike, but had never seen a guy resist his wife's urging to buy one; ultimately I relented and bought it. In 2013 she made the deal on my FJR while I was on a test ride; pretty good deal too. Two years ago we stopped in at the BMW dealer in Missoula. SU had a gift card she won in a mileage contest. There was a new GSA sitting on the floor and she said sit on it; so I did. She said I should get it; she wrote a check, so I did. Most recently I got a Ural with her support. So where is the trap you, may be wondering? On each occasion that I bought a new bike she whispered in my ear, "My turn." And indeed, each of these purchases was followed within a few months by SU getting a new bike or car. They are a devious lot.

Regarding the whole Euro 5 thing - I guess we'll just have to wait and see what Yamaha does. I wonder how closely related the FJR's engine is to any other, perhaps higher-volume, models that could justify the expense of updating the FJR's engine to meet the new requirements. And it's not like this new spec is any surprise for Yamaha.

Anyhoo. As for the 2020 FJR... Whew! Yamaha saved me the expense of getting a new one. I'm OK with the 2020 color, but it's nothing I'm compelled to run out and buy. Guess my dirty old whore '04 is gonna have to make do for at least another year.

I need my SU to spend some time with your SU. Back in 2005 we went to a dealership to look at a truck for me. We got to the sit down at the desk to discuss numbers and the salesman wrote a number on a post it note and put it in front of us. I put on my best frowny face and as I opened my mouth to tell the sales guy what I thought of said number, an excited voice to my right spouted out "Wow, we can TOTALLY afford that!!!"

She isn't even allowed to come vehicle shopping with me anymore. I even go buy her cars for her without her.

The EU thing is interesting. But if the demise of the FJR were as long reported, there wouldn’t have been a 2014 for me to buy. When I had the 2014, I learned that there probably wouldn’t be any new FJR any more by the time I was ready to trade... I don’t think they’re going anywhere here. If they do, I’ll step
down to a Tenere.

I'f this is true, I'd be very interested in the differences and how they got the exhaust numbers down.

The parts resellers do not have any listings for 2020 FJR parts, so I can't determine what parts differ from previous models (new exhaust can part number, for example)

I'm going to email Yamaha. Can't hurt to ask....

Sounds like Kali vs rest of US setup. Hopefully, for those in the market, its a part that can be replaced easily with a pre-2020 part.

Contacted Yamaha USA Motorsports. They have no comment regarding whether or not the NORTH AMERICAN 2020 FJR2020 is Euro 5 compliant. And they have no comment regarding ANYTHING on the European version. I got an email address for Yamaha Europe and I sent them a note. We will see....

Well, the USA 2020 FJR is the same as the 2019 FJR which is the same as the 2018 FJR... only difference is that the '20 is wearing the '15 color(?). Asphalt Gray isn't much of a color, note my avatar caption, the Bitumen Bullet. New features: NONE. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it?)
