Not bragging, but I have never lubed the cables...
185,000 miles on the '07 when I sold it and 87,500 so far on the '11.
Never felt gummy and never had to replace a cable.
Probably should do it next time I have it apart.

I had to replace my '07 cables due to broken strands from not lubing. Since then I use about 2 drops each every 2 or 3 yrs. I never felt like they bound up or felt gummy. I found it accidentally when I gained cable slack for the valve cover removal.

According to the owners manual;

Every 4000 miles.
Lubricate the throttle grip housing
and cable.

Well, that's a bit much.

I lubed the cables on my 07 with 120000 miles and it made a huge difference. It was lazy returning and was really hard to ride and shift smooth with it like that. After lube it was like new again. I did have a crack in the outer cable and I think it may have let water get in. I probably should have replaced, but lube made it like new.

Agree that it is a bit much! However, some is needed.
Just the grip end? Enough to run through or only a few drops?
Any particular oil/lube? (I have used a general lubricating oil or even motor oil on past bikes.)

For control cables the owners manual says;

Apply Yamaha chain and cable
lube or engine oil SAE 10W-30
thoroughly.

For me, it's 10w30 every two or so years. I put grease on the cable ends at the grip to prevent water from getting to it.

In my opinion, doing the throttle spring unwind will reduce cable life due to the cables pushing more, therefore flexing more. I still got over 100,000 miles with the unwind.

“Pushing” is a misnomer. Cables only pull.

Perhaps too much slack in the cable caused
it to flex, leading to it fraying & failing?

Yes, a misnomer.

I'm going to be a lot more careful now adjusting the slack out of the "push" cable.

I disconnect both cables at the grip end and put 2 drops of light oil in each cable while slowly pushing each cable in & out by hand. My "light oil" category consists of Tri-Flow or Motion Pro cable lube or gun oil. I've never used motor oil, don't ask me why not. I had new inner cables put in the existing cable assembly. New cable assemblies won't be available in North America until possibly Aug. 10 or Aug. 16 or the end of September depending on who is offering.

The airbox needed to be removed to get the cables hooked up. What a pain. I really got to hand to the people who can fish both cable ends into place.

It's a beatch..... wait til you get pissed off enough to pull the TB's... DAMHIK.
