AS much as I like the forum, I find myself here less and less. I understand you're not wanting to referee people arguing politics and insulting each other... BUT... You reminded us several times that it's your forum, your rules. You warned everybody to expect to get their feelings hurt and if they weren't going to be able to take it, to not participate. Very timely! I'd been thinking that it might be useful to have a sticky with some definitions of terms such as logical fallacy and non sequitur. Looks like there's two sides to the coin here as well, pro and anti back yard discussion. I thought creating the back yard area for potentially contentious discussions coupled with the several warning steps it takes to gain access to it was brilliant. For those that don't care to read such discussions they have the option to have either opt out up front, or turn if off when they find out it's not for them, simple and clean. I have to go with Marty that there are way too many in this country, and sadly apparently in this forum as well, these days that want access to everything, but then want to complain to daddy when things don't go to their way. This forum has great potential and I don't envy all the whining the admins are apparently having to put up with. Fwiw, might I comment that sure there have been some name calling here and there, and if that chaps some folks and violates the admin's guide lines then take action, it's your forum after all, but please also consider recognizing when the name calling is poking fun in jest. I would say to those that would like to see the back yard section shut down and subsequently whine to the admins about it all the time, why not just stay in the other sand box where it is clean and safe? Why put Wayne and Tim in this fix?

I'd guess, and I could be wrong, is that the people who complained were probably some that started a number of issues. Once started, they reported people responding to the fire they started. I'm guessing that the wrong people got a talking to. If you keep poking me with a stick and I punch you in the nose, do you punish the person that punched or the person that poked them with a stick? One was trying to get a reaction and one was reacting. Which one is worse?

Looks like, from the outside only, the people that punched back got the worst end of this.

Plus, it seems like 99.9% of it was about the COVID thread. Just leave things the way they are, with one new rule. No discussions about COVID policies. You can talk about your family or friends who have/had it and update that, but no discussions. Doesn't that solve almost the entire problem?

IMO people have been adequately warned that the back yard area is "the bad part of town" and they should not venture there unless they are willing to take responsibility for themselves. There should be no expectation of "the police" coming to the rescue.

The only policing of that area should be if someone whines/complains about something in that sub-forum, they should have their access to that area revoked.

Sure there is. If a discussion about some Canadian rights come up, I wouldn’t even consider telling a Canadian how things “should” be in Canada. That’s the affairs of Canadians. Since I’m not one, I don’t pretend to know what’s best for them. I’ll let them decide for themselves what they want from their government and their country.

Any time you come after someone’s country, it’s a given there’s going to be trouble. Can’t we just agree to let people show some respect on criticizing other’s countries and policies?

Much of the friction has generated from Covid related discussion, and unfortunately those attitudes spill over into other conversations. There are some members who simply can't resist the temptation to continue to poke at someone in every thread, even outside of the backyard sub forum. There have been threads started about hot-button type topics where the OP posts a link to a story and nothing else; that is an action that is doing nothing be stiring the waters and hoping for a topic that will spin off the rails. It's intentional in my view and is the kind of b.s. that needs to stop.

Now, if you have a point to make or share about a topic like that, and include an opinioin along with the link to the store, you're starting a conversation around the topic. But to just toss a flaming bag of dog crap over the fence and go stand in the corner to see who steps in it first - those are the threads that have lead to the current state of attitudes and tones.

Understand that I don't see removing the backyard sub forum as the fix. Doing that does not fix some making an offensive comment under the guise of sarcasm or joshing. Remember, sarcasm in spoken conversation, where tone, infliction reveal the sarcasm is not present when typed and posted in written text. It becomes much harder to discern when reading it versus hearing it.

OK, I'll fess up. I might be the one that started this whole shit show. Wayne, truth be told, I figured that the backyard was for folks to have a little arguement over differing opinions. I know I have been pokin the bear, but i'm pretty sure I have never been demeaning towards anybody. I might call them out on their beliefs or logic, but i don't personally put them down. Unless I actually have met them face to face.

The rules of the backyard seemed pretty straightforward and I'm pretty sure i abided by them. I will plead guilty to starting posts here that could be construed as somewhat inflammatory. I say keep this sub forum open, but maybe make 1 thread that will encompass all of the cursing and screaming and name calling, and the folks that can't handle it don't have to click on that thread. We are all adults here, and if sticks and stones will break your bones, then go to a playground that has bark and pea gravel on the ground, not hard dirt.

I would disagree as the WHOLE of the Backyard is already what you want limited to 1 thread. Again, if you are easily offended, there are lots of warnings before joining in as well as a way to leave it if you decide that it should be limited to just 1 thread.
