I re-tested mine this morning (as posted on our fartbook forum). No such rev limitations on my post-warranty-reflashed bike. Behaves just like before the work. Hope yours
gets sorted, and fast.

Edit- I may have confused RacingRay with another person who described similar symptoms and reported that Yamaha corporate told them that this is a normal and intentional part of the reflash. Which isn’t true. I’m looking forward to finding out the actual cause of op’s symptoms.

I just dropped the bike off at my dealer. I explained the symptoms I was experiencing and asked if the Tech could take a test ride while I was there. He comes back after 5 or so minutes and said he couldn't get it to do what I described. So l get on and right in front of him and get it to do what I was describing. He said he could definitely hear it but said that's not a normal way to ride. No shit! I explained that I was keeping the clutch in the "friction zone" longer than normal so he could hear the repeating stumble.

He said they would take a look at it but mentioned something about me "making it do it." I said I ran great when I brought it in and I expected it to run as well when I pick it up. I'm not optimistic.

Please let me know who is reporting the same issues. I have not been in contact with Yamaha although I have a feeling I will be.

Is it possible that some dealers didn't do the reflash and some did?

That's what I'm trying to determine. If it is the reflash, I'll get the Ivan reflash, if not I want it fixed.

So far, I don't know of anyone else with the same problem.

I got my 2016 non-ES back from recall work yesterday. I went for a ride to test it, based on the info in this thread.

No issues. It runs the same way it did prior to the recall work.

Good luck with your bike RacinRay. Sorry for your troubles

FJRoss would suggest that you inspect the engine covers to see if any wires are pinched. There has been a running issue caused by a pinched wire and the symptoms were not what you would have expected.

More clarity on the reflash info is dribbling in, and it would appear one should not notice any symptoms from the reflash, bike should behave as normal. RacingRay's symptoms appear to be something different. If I understand it right, it's an issue while launching the bike in first while slipping the clutch and some limitation kicks in at 3000 rpm (or above). Shouldn't have anything to do with the recall, but perhaps others could try that. I'd suggest dealer call Yamaha for clarification, and if this was a feature incorporated for Gen4, or was it part of the recall. That's where the real answer will come from.

Always a possibility - did that happen to anyone but me? (O2 sensor wires pinched in timing case cover)
Still worth checking but the symptoms seem oddly specific with an apparent rev limit while feathering the clutch in first or second gear. I thought traction control until the OP said it happened with TC on or off.

Ross, you are not alone.... that ignition pickup wire can get trapped in the right timing cover, but usually causes other running issues. Worth checking, sure.

The dealer just called me and said they had spoken to Yamaha and the behavior my bike is exhibiting is due to the reflash of the ECU.

...guess I won't be having that done to mine 8-)

Only happens when slipping the clutch? Does the ECU "know" you are slipping the clutch - figured it was just a yes-no thing to handle cruise and ignition interlocks. Perhaps it bases it on an inconsistency between engine speed and wheel speed for the given gear? In any case, they should let people know so they don't get a surprise.

Looks like I'll be getting the Ivan's Performance reflash in the future.

You should talk to Ivan first and see if his flash even touches that. He may not even be aware of it.

I’d call Corporate directly. I don’t believe for a moment that there is a special flash for some bikes that limits normal revs. If it were my bike, I’d bet that the dealer was misleading me because they didn’t want to go back into the bike to see what they’d screwed up. Next most likely a that they asked someone at the bozo show in Kennesaw, who made up something on the spot.

Both are plausible, and have happened before. Either way, this is not normal for a reflashed bike post recall, as a number of us can attest. Good luck with your dilemma. I’d be upset too.

I 100% agree. But I would suspect a lot of people will be looking for this fix and it will create some demand.

The person I spoke with at Yamaha Corporate said the issues I described are do to the reflash. He said the reflash is not optional for the dealer/customer.
