Update from dreamhost; there is another customer on the shared server eating resources, they are "addressing" it now.

Re: FJRiders Forum Host and Performance Discussion
I like the idea that excess donations get turned into swag that's given away -- as long as Wheatie doesn't get any.
A few websites sell coffee mugs and t-shirts on CafePress, Etsy, or Zazzle. While most of us aren't IT types, we could muddle through the setup for an FJRiders site and two or three designs for stuff like that.
Lastly, if you estimate costs (plus a little extra for emergencies) then you can announce a fund drive for that amount of money. Accept PMs as pledges until you reach the goal. Any PMs after that get a, "Thanks, but we've reached our goal!" reply.

When you said the above, it made me wonder about below.extrememarine wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 8:45 am I had a chat discussion with support staff at the hosting company; he spent some time looking at configuration and server usage. They are telling me that I'm hitting memory limits on the hosted server, along with some optimization to look at.

I noticed that the other day in that same thread... the unread posts listing showed that 0face had posted something but it wasn't there. Tried reloading... same thing.wheatonFJR wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 1:09 pmI'm seeing that as well...that's a new one on me.Festus wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 1:04 pm I have an issue right now, I just posted a reply to the Sena 30K thread. On the "New Posts", it shows my posting and the time it was posted. When I go to the thread, my post isn't there.
When I posted it, it took my back to the thread but my post wasn't there. So it's not showing it there, but it's listing it as a new posts in the index.
I haven't seen that before.

Re: FJRiders Forum Host and Performance Discussion
I'm good with a subscription fee, as I do elsewhere, and understand I have to follow their rules. For now, like we do at tech days or events where somebody's supplying the food, there's a cookie jar and while we might have eaten $10 worth of food, we all toss in a 20 and don't want any change. That might be a suggestion if there is an immediate cost to change hosts.... I'm good with that, and we'll talk subscriptions later. I don't want to talk about Wheatie..... in public anyway.

I'm sure they are managing the conversation with all the customers on this server. I know they are down playing it. But I'm sure there are issues like trying to run the bare minimum resources to keep costs down yet trying to deliver what the marketing flyer promises.
I'm in operations; we are constantly resetting customer expectations because the sales team said, "sure, we do that" without actually knowing what we can and can not do...

Do the research for me - annual host plan, bandwidth, memory limits, storage limits, etc...
Does anyone here have experience with Amazon Web Service - hosting a website with them?
What I've learned here is that you have to look deeper than the marketing and sales brochures. Help educate me - you ask why not, I ask why...

Also make sure you explore getting out if it doesn't work. They have some interesting restrictions supposedly on data transfer and such and costs, etc. Also, make sure to check Azure as well as google's new competition.extrememarine wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 4:23 pm Do the research for me - annual host plan, bandwidth, memory limits, storage limits, etc...

Re: FJRiders Forum Host and Performance Discussion
Wayne, just figure what you need, and let us know. I'm like most here, and haven't a clue about how this all works. I just know that this place is like a home for me. I come over here everyday, and post most days. Unlike the "other place", I feel welcome and appreciated here. There's not a huge rule book to memorize, nor excessive moderation, and for some odd reason...it works!
A couple of years ago, I tried to start a Forum based on action cameras. I kept it for 2yrs, but only got a handful of people, so I shut it down. It was cool though, and let users upload photos without separate photo hosting. I paid about $20 a year for it, but then again, I didn't have any traffic. https://www.1and1.com/web-hosting Is what I used.
Just throwing it out there.
I guess what I'm saying is, that I really like it here and don't want this to be a burden for you. If contributions could possibly ease that burden, then by all means, just let me know.
All the best,
A happy and loyal FJRider member

Re: FJRiders Forum Host and Performance Discussion
While I am an IT guy, i'm not a web-type of IT guy. I mainly deal with Active Directory, Exchange, backups and the like. However I do work with web-type IT folks. I will ask them about hosting recommendations.
I suspect that you are on a virtual server that they are over committing resources for. E.g. The physical host has 64 GB of RAM. They have 10 VMs (virtual machines) hosted on the physical host. They tell each machine that it has 16 GB of RAM. Normally each VM only uses a fraction of the RAM. When one or two VMs suck up all their RAM and don't let it go, the other VMs suffer because memory has to be swapped back-and-fourth to disk. Big time bottle neck which may be the cause of the 500 errors.

Re: FJRiders Forum Host and Performance Discussion
All of this sounds important and I know I should really care... But I don't. I have come to regard Wayne and his forum as Something Permanent. Wayne and his forum are like a military issue WW2 Era 1911 pistol. Solid, reliable, everything you need, nothing fancy and loaded with some powerful ammunition. (We the members are the ammunition). Just like a good 1911, certain conditions affect its performance but it ALWAYS works.
I will start to Care as soon as Wayne says, "I need $". When Wayne says he needs $, I will send $$$.
As for the "I paid to support I should be able to do what I want", I am kind of interested in that idea. I will be willing to pay some serious $$$ if I could be allowed to Edit/Moderate/Delete all of Gixxerjasen and Cav47s posts. Rather than pay to say what I want, I am willing to pay to be able to control what those two asshats can say. Imagine Cav's frustration when every single post he makes instantly gets edited and changed to something of MY choosing! Oh the possibilities!
Seriously, I have no issues with the idea of there being surplus money in Wayne's bank account. The costs of running this place on paper and the Actual Cost of the man's time and energy are two different things. If he found himself with enough money to put an extra tank of gas in his FJR, I am good with that.

Redfish Hunter is a fine upstanding and dapper gentleman. I really enjoy his company with or without his father present. RH is a fantastic rider whom I could never hope to keep up with on his beautiful asphalt gray FJR, which of course, is the finest of color for an FJR.
