Pants Is Going to Try a Tire Change

I have a mojo lever on its way and plan to pick up the Harborfreight tire changer soon
It's the cheap bastage syndrome in me I suppose
I figure it'll run somewhere around 2.5 benjies with future dividends

It does make sense - harder on acceleration will eat the tires. I just didn't realize I was riding any different.

I guess I'm gonna try the B compound PR2 and see how much longer it last on the back. From there, I may try a set of EVOs just to see. But I will time that until after YFO. I don't want to be halfway across the country testing tires. I'd rather go with the devil I know....

MikeP and I keep talking about going in halves on a tire machine. That would save cost and aggravation.
Not just harder acceleration. Higher velocities/greater lean angle/greater cornering forces and all the tire wear associated with it.

You may not have realized you have been pushing harder but I sure did. I can quickly get out of my comfort zone trying to follow you now.

Is there a "B" compound PR2? I am ignorant of this.

For our black rims you'll prolly want the mojo blocks that fit the machine too
I forgot about that item.... ok maybe closer to 3 benjies plus balancer which I already had
I've not used that bar yet but I did see BigJohnSD using his to put on his Avons just before nafo

I'd think you're not going to get a longer wearing tire than the PR2 if wear is your primary concern. Everything else mentioned has softer compounds......

With the Mojo Blocks and Mojo Bar you will have spent under $250 and have a tire changer that will serve you well for years.

I love mine ... about 6 tire changes pays for it.

You may have some trouble with the vertical bar that is supposed to go down through the wheel. I use a 36" breaker-bar in its place.

The progression of skill is transparent from the cockpit, but very apparent from the audience.

Tire selection can play to your favor now, but more so in changing your input to the bike - throttle, brake, velocity.

If you want to run the pace you're running, then the cost of admission to that concert is tire mileage. Isn't the music wonderful?

I leave you with this; spoon a Pilot Power on the front. Pair it with a PR2 rear. A Conti Road Attack 2 GT rear will remain sticky longer than the PR2, but now you're mixing tire models AND brands.

At least that what Wheatie told me...

I've told you lots of stuff, but that wasn't one of them. I know nothing about tires except they are round. And sometimes get holes in them.

I'm just a follower around here, and just does what eye sees works fer someone else.

My Nomar, for example. Works great once you know how to use it. Wouldn't trade it fer nuttin.

I bought a length of 3/4" steel rod and had it threaded to screw into the socket on the HF changer I think it was 3/4 10 tpi. The 3/4 rod 2works for the FJR but is to big for my KLR, I have a piece left and will have it turned down to the appropriate diameter and the end threaded too.

"B" spec PR2's were discontinued. I was running them the first 2 pairs but now using the regular spec tire. Apparently I must ride pretty conservatively as I get almost 14k out of my tires. 41 psi front 43 rear measured cold.

B/C (and everyone) - thanks for that info. Now I've got to re-group. Perhaps I will try a PR3 "b spec". Really, by the time you get to the PR4, PR4GT, etc - the added cost of the tire makes it pretty much cost prohibitive, even adding in the cost of the mount/balance by someone else.

It looks like the cost of the T30 EVO is comparable to the PR2.

No free lunch at this cafeteria. You gotta pay if you wanna play....

PR3s are notoriously low on warning from looking worn to seeing steel. I know of at least a couple guys who had emergency tire situations with the PR3.

Yeah, TomInPA and I had that come up at the first Rueben Run. Both of us left our houses thinking we had plenty of tread, and both of us needed replacements.

I'm on my 2nd set of the T30 Evos. 190/55GT, and I really like them. Set #3 is waiting in the garage. I've gotten a $50 rebate card with every set, on top of lower prices.

AJ - what kind of mileage did you get out of the T30s front and back? Any problems with cupping on the front? Did you find that the tire performed reasonably well throughout it's useful mileage? IOW - did the tire fall WAY off as it wore down?

And where can I get one (or more) of those $50.00 rebate cards?

Soooooooo, I took my 1st set off early because I was going to Hooterville. Then the poop hit the fan and here and I couldn't go. So, I think there was around 6.5k on the set I took off, and I'm expecting another 2 or 3k out of them when I put them back on. I'd have to go look and do actual math for actual numbers. Point is, those tires are not used up yet.

No cupping or weird wear. A little flat spotted, but that was from the freeway miles heading home. I ran those tires to the Red Lodge Rendezvous, and then to NAFO, with my wife on the back. On top of being mounted on the bike way before either.

Tires perform very well. No complaints during any part of their life. I was surprisingly impressed.

A guy on FJRForum linked me to a rebate, but it was for Canada. After searching Bridgestone's site, I found the American equivelant. A couple of the sites that carry them will send notices when the rebates are in effect. I'd search through Rocky Mountain ATV, Dennis Kirk, Chaparral, and some others. I THINK I got these last sets from DK.

Well - as of this writing, Bridgestone does not have any rebates for US customers. I've shopped far and wide. The best price on a set of EVO GTs is about $46.00 or 21% cheaper than a set of PR2s. That's just enough to keep me interested. Maybe I'll try a set and see if I get the same mileage and how I like them.

OTOH, I'll be changing tires to go to YFO in June. Based on about 1000 miles a month, a new set of PR2s would be just about right.

I've still got about 1500 miles left on my current rear.

I've just about over thought this thing to death.... crap, I dunno what I'm gonna do now.....

I was looking for a new back tire also
Was really looking at the PR2 for the mileage factor but they don't offer a 190/55 in that series so I chose to go with another PR4 for this next go around. Don't think it'll last through YFO though.
