What did you do to your FJR today?

Moved the Sena 20s to our new helmets. Replaced my 12 year old RF1100 with a Shoei Neotec II. Replaced my wifes 15 year old HJC with a Shoei RF 1400. Both were a bitch to get the Senas on as they both have obstacles where the Sena would normally mount. BIG thanks to FJRPittsburgh for pictures and text advice.

How's your wife like that RF-1400? I tried one on the other day. It was nice! Where did you end up getting them?

Bought them both off of Motostorm.it. Saved about $180 on the RF1400. Saved about $340 on the Neotec. Wife wears sunglasses always so didn't need the drop down sun visor. She picked this one. It's a little tight and may need smaller cheek pads. First road test for both is Friday morning on a weekend trip.

Her only experience has been with that now old HJC, so I'm hoping this is a big step forward.

I think you already accomplished that. It's a nice helmet. I really liked it. I also looked at the X-15. So nice, but also $1,000 so I would expect it to be nice. I bet she's going to love the quietness of that Shoei.

I should add that on MotoStorm the RF1400 is called the Nxr2, or at least it looked exactly the same to me. And I bought it on sale, so that $180 savings may be a little less than that.

I put a new rear tire on my FJR today.
- Cycle Gear is currently offering half price mounting and balancing services, I paid $19. -
I installed the wheel on the drive hub, got the abs ring and caliper lined up first try and the axle slid through like butter. Bolted the caliper to the arm and as I went around to put the axle nut on what do I see laying on the floor? The big spacer that goes on the brake side of the wheel. Doh! It was going way to easy. Disassemble, insert spacer, reassemble and all is well.

Tried holding the wheel at angles to find an initial bite. Tried putting the axle through so that the wheel has to be concentric with the hub. Never found a magic bullet, it is always trial and error until suddenly it slips into place.

I find that the axle helps to get it aligned. If nothing else, it allows you to manipulate without having to hold the wheel off the ground. Also helps if the bike is in gear so the splines can't rotate.

Yes, I do that too but still sit there for minutes sliding the wheel in/out on the axle trying to find mesh. Pushing it against the hub and turning with transmission in gear sounds like a deterministic no-fail solution but for some reason it doesn't. Trial and error is the only way I've figured out how to get the wheel on drive splines.

Hmmm...I've never had an issue with this. I've always just put the wheel on to the spline, then the caliper bracket, and slide the axle in.

Apparently I do it differently- floor jack & firring strip under the pipes. Jacking up the front lowers the rear down to the wheel. Slides right together with no difficulty provided the bike is in first gear.

I have two sets of wheels. I find that one rear wheel seems to slip onto the hub splines of the same scooter just slightly easier than the other wheel does. Maybe some slight differences in tolerances or wear. Sometimes I remember to put the transmission in gear, sometimes I wish I had remembered to put the transmission in gear. Maybe I just have better luck some days than others. Maybe the weather, maybe the butterfly effect, maybe coriolis effect. Maybe margaritas would help, is 1 enough, is 6 too many?? Maybe none of it really matters at all.

On the GEN 3 scooters (2013-2023) the ABS pickup mount plate and the spacer that goes behind it are two separate pieces. Makes it easier to lose or forget to put the spacer in first, then the plate. This is true for front and rear wheels.
On the GEN 2 scooters (2008-2012) the ABS pickup mount plate and spacer are one piece. Can't lose or forget the spacer and makes it easier to get the plate in place without needing 3 hands while installing the axle. This is especially true on the front wheel. Those 2008-2012 ABS pickup plates are interchangeable with the GEN 3 ABS pickup plates. Makes life easier when installing the wheels. YMMV

I've done a friend's 2014 for the past 90-100,000 miles and my own for 85,000 and have the same trouble with both.

If not lazy in bed I'd look but have mounted 11-12 rear tires on my 2016.

No doubt it is easy for some, just hasn't been my luck with only two FJRs.

As Russ says, in first gear, and with wood under rear tire and/or jacking up headers lines up better without having to lift the weight of the wheel much. Nevertheless, splines have to line up and you'll be lucky if that happens first shot at it.

Instead of wood - I used my left foot under the tire. I can flex my toes and/or push my foot farther forward or outward (wedge effect) to lift and/or lower the tire just a smidge. At the same time, I'm using my left hand to wiggle against the locked spline, and my right hand to insert the axle.

Went on a quest for the first 3 of about 88 covered bridges in PA. (Thanks Bkerchuck for the GPS file). 336 miles today. Started early as today is to be 90 or so.

Rode south to Baltimore to photograph some more murals. Added 40 more to break 500 so far. Bought oil on the way home and did an oil/filter change when I got home. 55k miles now on the '14.
