Update-fixed...I hope I don't, but I might have a malfunctioning ABS block

Post by wheatonFJR »

I was over at Griff's getting speedbleeders installed and getting the old out and the new in. I have real brake lever action now. Old stuff was pretty orange...especially the linked line.

So we go to exercise the ABS block and nothing happens. Damn. Do it repeatedly, even put a charger on the bike battery, just in case. Still nothing. Damn. Go watch some online idiots video, just in case, the last 1/6th of it cuz the first 5/6 was blah biddy blah blah blah. So we are getting a n ABS_25 error code. Front ABS signal issue apparently. So, I'm going to clean up both front and rear sensors tomorrow after a short ride with my son David.

If that doesn't do it, I'm fucked, as I don't know what to do next.

I tried to activate the rear ABS on the way home from Griff's, went from 50 to 20 just stamping on the rear brake. Rear wheel fish tailed with no pedal vibrator. Double Damn.

Kudos to griff who worked with me in his garage with temps in the mid 90s!

So you have a service manual? There is an entire chapter (50-ish pages) on the ABS system.

Well. Keep us posted. I’m not convinced that you’re hosed yet, but I’m optimistic about potential outcomes for other people’s problems. Like you, when I have an issue, I only expect the worst.

I only post this to help: Today, I pulled the baffles from my new Yoshi exhaust. I’m already being judged by all the folks who, like me, rightly think that any mod that doesn’t increase performance or LD comfort is an exercise in self flagellation. Due to my bag guards, it’s a drunken street fight to get the hangers off and back on so I can remove the cans to get to the (not spot welded any more, master Glynn) retention screws. It ended up being an hour and a half of cursing, sweat pouring down, only to remove baffles that I’m going to put back in, in two days, all pertaining to exhaust cans that are about as functional as nipple rings. Okay, they may be functional for Oface and Wheaton, I mean for normal people.

I just admit defeat and take it to a Yamaha dealer since I screwed up the ABS on my 04 about 10 years ago.
Good luck!

How many ABS failures have we had? Not sure I've heard of any before this. Heck, even I haven't managed to destroy mine, yet, that I am aware of.

There were a BUNCH of ABS failures on the Gen I bikes.
A lot less on the Gen II bikes but I have heard of a couple.
I haven't heard of any on the Gen III+. Yes, they are newer but there are 6 year old Gen III on the road and still no issues (except Wheaton's, of course).

It will have to be some other weekend. I'm riding with my son tomorrow am for a couple hours...won't miss that. I have great brakes for this weekend's rides..just no ABS at the moment.

This is where I just step back and blame jwilly. I mean, is it possible he just ABSed the hell out of this thing running from authorities on the way here????

NAHHHHHHH.

I ride old school and slow and pretend I don't have ABS, even though my '08 still has the ABS working fine. I exercise them once in awhile on gravel. I'm not worried. Some day I'll put Ray's switch in, but I'm lazy.

I guess I'd be upset too if my new to me bike wasn't properly fetteled.

What did you use to jump out the ABS Test Connector? If not the factory or Ray's contraption, it's easy to muck it up.

Need a damn like button for SOME of these posts.

Russ, used a factory jumper. I'm going to be looking for a fuse, if I can figger out which one it is...and clean the ABS sensors like Ross said. If it's the fuse I would be wondering why it blew.
