Bar ends. Part from hell.

Post by bungie4 »

I've had those VERY nice Aerostitch helmet lock/bar ends (http://www.aerostich.com/bar-ender-helmet-locks.html) on my 04 since the day I bought it. I use them all the time. So I thought I'd move them onto the 13.

Get out the Allen keys and remove the stock bar end off the 13. You know the inner sleeve the actual bar end screws on to?

HOW THE SWEET FLYING f@$k does that thing come out?! I thought it was one of those magic rubber expando gizmo's. Nope. I can see it's rubber mounted in a metal sleeve. So I thought press fit.

Screw the bar end retaining nut in about half way, grab it with some vice grips an give it a couple of good reefs.

No budgie.

I try again, and this time damn near pull the bike off the centerstand. I felt like that mangy squirrel in IceAge trying to get that nut.

I gave up on it for now and put everything back together.

Do I need some kinna puller to get that thing out?

i have not tried it. but intend to. I wondered if that hole bottoms out you could just screw a long screw in there and it would push it right out. I'll go try that right now.

Don't think so.

If I need a puller, I"ll try a socket along with a longer screw to pull it out. The problem is the outer sleeve is very thin. Might be a bit of a bitch to find a socket that'll cover the end of the bar and not the sleeve.

Yes Steve all you need us a long bolt and either a washer or a socket, which is an awesome idea. The socket has to be bigger than the bar. Put the bolt through, and tighten it. You'll feel the insert pulling out. It's stuck in there pretty good.

If you use a washer, get the insert all the way to the end of the bar. Then let the screw out, move the washer out and use a rubber mallet against the washer. Slow but deliberate. This may bend your washer, so you may need 2.

I wouldn't heat those bars...

Oh...If you know someone with a Throttle Meister, see if they still have the puller that came with those bar ends. I still have mine...

Nothing is easy anymore...

The de-modding of the 04 has started.

The one I'm really concerned with is the Hella HID's. I've ordered the '13 mounts from Gaurald so that part should be a bolt up, it's the issue of where I'm gonna find room to stuff the ballasts. The Hella ballasts are HUGE. I know it's possible to buy smaller replacement ballasts, but you can you get them with the proper hi-tension connectors on them? Something to look into.

Guess first things first though and pop off the panels and have a look.

Lil update. So I was stripping the 04 and was taking off the helmet lock bar ends (Aerostitch) when I noticed the 'inserts' looked suspiciously like the stock inserts on the 13.

Unscrew the bar ends on the 13. Screw in the helmet locks in their place. Well son of a bitch! They use the stock inserts! Crisis averted. Mental note, examine ALL the parts before you Ass-U-Me you need to do something.

Good thing the mechanic at Yamaha aborted their removal when he didn't want to leave me stranded trying to take them out!

Karma, gotta love it.
