Bent Rear Wheel
I got back from a great 5 day trip through the Appalachians and removed the rear wheel to replace the tire. Once off the bike, I noticed a small dent in the rear wheel.
A quick eBay search found no decent wheels available.
Has anyone here had any luck getting a wheel straightened at a wheel shop?
Has anyone tried to do it with a big hammer and a 2x4?
The tire holds air so the bead is intact.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
I have straightened the bead area on steel automotive wheels with the hammer and 2 x 4 method with pretty good success. I think I would be willing to try a SMALL fix for an alloy wheel on my bike but there is a really good chance that it could crack. If it is more than very slight, I would send it to a professional or discard the wheel entirely.

Heckuva deal..... just up the road from me (40 minutes) if you want it, I'll go pick it up if you arrange with the seller. It can be in Ohio Lake Hope State Park June 6/7/8. However, if minor, there are wheel straightening places...... likely one near you who fixes/restores.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
That wheel is the correct color (black) for my '16 but it looks pretty hacked up.
I've found two shops locally that fix automotive wheels but neither will touch a motorcycle wheel. I'm afraid if I have to pay shipping both ways to an out of town shop that with the cost of the repair it will be as much as a new wheel.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
Bet you would hardly notice the damage after application of appropriate touch-up paint...
Or strip the wheel and have it powder coated.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
Panman has had a couple rims straightened successfully, one front rim with a big ding in it. He's still using them, they balance well and it's hard to see the damage unless looking for it.
If you can find a local shop, definitely doable.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
Lots of YouTube stuff on straightening wheels if you want to give it a go. (I would only consider it if it was relatively minor).
Did a quick search and found this which was interesting:

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
I expected the flea-bay wheel to be more "hacked up". After all, it's a Gen III - comes with the crappy black paint as standard factory idiocy.
I'd buy that one and touch it up.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
I have used a place in Atlanta to repair two FJR rims and they did a great job and it was pretty cheap as I recall, around $35. I'm in the same boat as Griff right now, both my front and rear rim have a small ding on the right hand bead. Still seals fine and balances and I honestly don't want to be without my rims for a few days.

Re: Bent Rear Wheel
I used a piece of wood and a hammer to straighten out the dent. Most of the dent came out and I had a new tire mounted and balanced so all is good for now.

Welp, You just saved me $70 and downtime tweaking my rims... I will try your method the next time I swap tires.
