Final Drive Oil Leak

Post by RacinRay »

I was walking by my '16ES (35K miles) last week and I noticed a few drops oil on the floor just ahead of the pumpkin. Upon closer inspection I found oil residue and grime all over the final drive, rim and halfway up the swing arm. I cleaned up the oil on the floor and it hasn't leaked any more.

I can't see where the oil is leaking from but it appears to be a fair amount. I haven't changed the gear oil recently so I don't think it was an over fill issue. There are no other oil spots on the floor. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to proceed?

None of the above.

The oil level didn't look low when I just took out the top plug.

There is a small hole on the flat surface ahead of the pumpkin, that’s most likely where it came from.
The seal there is an easy fix but I would just watch it and if it keeps dripping that seal may need replacing.

Shouldn't be a seal failure at that low mileage..... too much grease on the rear wheel splines at a tire change will fling off...... can't 'splain anything else, overfill would have oil spray out the upper vent...... just keep an eye on it. You can pull the pumpkin next tar change and see what's happening maybe?

That makes sense given where I found the oil (ahead of the pumpkin).

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it.

Well, it's definitely leaking from the weep hole in front of the pumpkin.

I have a 5 day ride starting on the 16th. I don't know if I can get it fixed by then. I wonder if I can swap the pumpkin from my '06?

Does anyone know if a 2006 pumpkin is a direct swap for the 2016?

I was just thinking that this is the first time in 13 years of owning FJRs that I've had a part fail. A great record but an unfortunate time for a failure.

Same pumpkin, go for it.
(It's not, but physically same, will bolt on).
Existing seal should not catastrophically fail.
