16k maintenance question

How many folks build the frame out of cast iron pipe like the one made by Bryan Glynn to hold up their bikes while they perform the centre stand etc maintenance..how many suspend the bike from the rafters..and how many use an engine stand?

I also use rafters. When working on the center stand, suspension or swing arm a few 500lb ratchet straps at the rear and a Canyon Dancer at the handle bars to keep it from falling over. I lock the bars, bike won't swivel that way.

Don't over think it......

Pterodactyl thinks his FJR is a Panzer tank, so has the big beam, powered by Jagermeister. 2x6's will handle the load, and you have to either put the front wheel in a chock with some kind of ties or Canyon Dancer to keep the bike from flopping around. If you had a lift like mine, just clamp the front wheel, it won't go anywhere. If you have the rear wheel on a 2x4, you won't have to lift it very high to free up the centerstand.

Saw-horse brackets and long 2x4's for me. Basically a really tall saw-horse.

I cut up a sheet of 1/2” plywood into strips, then sistered a convenient 2x6 joist - offsetting the joints on every layer until it was 4” thick...using industrial adhesive and a gazillion wood screws. I then drilled a 1/2” hole, put in a eyebolt and bought a cheap chain hoist..

I do. No screwing up the ceiling of the garage and you can rotate the feet 90º to make the assembly flat for storing between the wall and a shelf.

Same here, works well. P.S. It is black iron pipe, not cast.

I have an A Frame made out of 1 1/4" pipe, looks like a swing set.
Picked up the front of my truck on a bet.

I welded threaded Tee's together at the top and unscrew the four legs.

The pipe set up rocks. I usually stick a bag of grass seed or something else kinda heavy on the back seat. Then the front end floats up super easy.

I also put the center stand on some 3/4 inch plywood to gain just a bit more height when changing tires. It makes them roll out easier.

I'm fast approaching my 16K maintenance interval and would like to build the pipe stand because the 12 x 24 shed that is my shop has minimal rafters. However, I want to lift the rear while it is on my lift so I don't have to service the swingarm on the ground. I'm thinking I will need 6' long pipe for the sides rather than the 4' sections listed elsewhere. Will 3/4" pipe work for that still, or should I look at 1" pipe so it is a bit sturdier?

This is how I did it. Some scrap metal, a pipe, a drill, and jack stands. Easy storage.
