Airbox mod.

Post by Leprechaun »

Sorry if this has been done to death-I'm posting here hoping not to get flamed.
Riding the FJR, I get the feeling that there's a beast under too much control-
I like the smooth acceleration but I always think there's something lacking-namely
the air flow-or is this just an impression. I know that other people have done mods to the air intake-
is it worth doing?
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a fresh, clean air filter? Makes a big difference, especially on top end.

There has been a lot of things attempted. I'm heading out right now, but when I get home, I can expand on this - I was present when Uselesspickles thrashed his '08 with all the mods and then we ran my bone stock '09 on the same dyno / same day and the power was within one hp of each other...

Do you have a Power Commander? Maybe it's just the delivery of power where you want it?

I don't believe the airbox is a big restriction. Removing the catalytic convertors and Leo Vinci cans made mine spin up quicker into the power band.
If I had a spare FJR cylinder head/throttle bodies/airbox, I would put the system on my flowbench to prove my theories.

Butt dyno says Power Commander, exhaust mods, and unifilter made maybe 3 HP. (I don't believe some of the HP gain claims by others)

You can do the "Cdog air box mod." You basically cut that inner tube down to a nub and then cut a hole on the right side if the air box, inside the other oval locating nub.

Bike will have a different "sucking" sound at full throttle, and may feel like it's getting more at the low end, but other than UP I donno that anyone has actually done accurate measurements.

I did mine and I like it...

If you go hunting on the other forum, Uselesspickles spend a good amount of time with his '08 on the dyno. The primary focus was developing the tuning for is AFR Moty EFI controller - think Power Commander. He had the wicky webby air box mod. We ran my bone stock '09 on that same dyno that morning for 3 pulls. We ran his bike with the programmer and air box mods for more runs than I can remember; the reason for the multiple runs was because the AFR Moty had a "learning mode" where it would adjust the fuel tables to tune towards a specific Air / fuel ratio.

Then end result was peak hp and tq numbers for both bikes were with in 1-2 hp & ft/lbs of each other. He had dips in his output curves due to his fueling programming. I'll dig for the the dyno sheets he sent me after the runs when I get a few minutes.

If I remember correctly, he later found that part of the WW mod had came apart and some of the screen may have been ingested by the motor.
