Gen 3 mirror mount/stay broken

Post by Allen_C »

As some of you know I had a low side accident Sunday and my mirror stay and upper fairing broke. I'm thinking I could replace both myself but need some help!

Has anyone here replaced the stay and removed/reinstalled the front plastics on a Gen 3? I need to get this done within 5 weeks to attend EOM. I'm hoping to find someone either in a nearby state who I can ride to for assistance (bike is rideable) or is willing to or have video/pictures of this work.

Please post here or pm me if you have done this before!

Thanks, Allen

As posted on FJRForum, I can weld up your old one and send it back the next day for $30 plus S&H as long as it is straight.

I have in fact done it... all day job that will go a little quicker next time.... what broke on the fairing? Pictures or it didn't happen. I'd say epoxy up the stay with some non-JB Weld brand (too runny) if it isn't too bad. Can do that in situ most likely.

I haven't had time to find another pic hosting site. I posted a pic on the FB group and can email you one if you pm me your email address! The upper fairing broke off on the right side next to where the mirror was mounted.

I did it earlier this year on Jolene. If you do it by yourself, as I did, you will need to take great care in noting where each bolt, screw, etc.. goes. There's a bunch of them, and it's extremely tight spaced (it is packed into that nose section). I'm just average at mechanics, so it took a weekend for me, so I would set aside 2 days. If you have help, it would go quicker.

If I break one on my '16, I'm filing for insurance, and letting someone else fix it.

Best of luck, Allen.

That question was asked by many...and answered on Facebook, where Allen originally posted about his get off.

I posted on the FB group that I'm good. I got up myself, picked up the bike with help, rode it across the grasss back to the road and went to lunch before riding back home!

So, I'm uninformed as a non-Facebook guy. Glad you're OK Allen; the bike looks a little rough.

Meh, a little plastic surgery and she'll be back to being the hot red headed babe he knows and loves. Shit happens, glad you're ok!

Wowzie, yeah, glad you're OK....... nose fairing has to come off anyway, mostly, so new one can go right back on. Check tab (and screw) under the right front of the battery cover, the tab is on the lower fairing, if it's cracked, use some plastic epoxy to reinforce it. Yes it is a big job, I did do mine over two days, but with a second pair of hands to hold stuff out of the way/back in place, it will go faster. Budget one long day. Hey, host a tech day in Indy!!
Note in Mcatrophy's thing, he went to lengths to grind down a screwdriver handle to take out the middle screw in a hard to get at place.... not necessary until after the headlight/fairing are off.

I didn't grind down a handle, just found one that could squeeze in there. Thought that screw had to come out in order to pull the front off, if not I'd have saved a lot of time fiddling, both to get that screw out and to replace it on assembly.

Ah yes, it was ME who ground down a handle come to think of it, was following your guide as I went, which is your usual excellence at work BTW.

Alan, if you want to save a lot of work, fix the stay with epoxy in situ after the nose fairing has been replaced.... I broke mine 3 times, all accidentally, the third time was a real accident, so it was time to buy the $200 part.

Allen,

Justin and I have my front end torn apart doing the same thing to mine where I dropped it. Should be going this weekend to get it all put back together. Let me know what you need pics of if anything.

I think that is the fastest 14 I have ever ridden with.

Good luck on the repairs. Hope it goes smoothly.
