"Adv Tires" for the FJR

Thinking ahead to Alaska 2019.

With the amount of fresh chip seal, road repair and the , "Top of the World" in my mind, I'm exploring my options for tires with a bit more aggressive tread than the typical "Sport Touring" tires we know and love.

I find some in 170/60-17 but few fronts.

Does anyone have experience running a 80/20 or 70/30 tire on their FJR.

The TKC-80 comes in standard FJR sizes, but I doubt you'll make it on a rear TKC. Run a TKC up front where it is important and a good Dual Sport tire on the rear in 170/60.

TKC 70 for the rear?? (Less aggressive, probably longer lasting)
Trail Attack 2 (even less aggressive but might be OK, depending on how far off the beaten track you want to go.)

I don't currently use them but I've had several sets of TKC80's on dual sport bikes. They truly are a 50/50 tire so if you're not going to be running on dirt 50% of the time I'd go with something less knobby - an 80/20 or maybe 70/30 road biased. They'll last longer and be smoother on the street.

By golly now that someone mentioned the TKC70s that would make a great tire for an Alaskan FJR trip. I put them on my Tenere before going to Colorado to attend NAFO in 2016 and just took them off before we went to Baja. These tires have close to 6000 miles on them. The front tire tread is blocked off and the rear is very squared off but it wouldn't surprise me if they went 8000 miles. I've rode about a thousand miles of gravel and over Cinnamon Pass in Colorado with the TKC 70 and I think it would make a great FJR tire. The front tire had some weird vibration / wobble thing going on when I first took off for Colorado but it went away in a little over a hundred miles. They hooked up perfect on rocky steep climbs over Cinnamon Pass, never did anything stupid on gravel, got me through some deep sand after being well worn, and railed the corners nicely on the black top.

Front tire with lots of tread but the tread scalloped some. I might need to run a touch more air pressure or check the suspension setting when I mount the new ones.


The rear tire starts out with ridiculously deep tread and has squared off with all the slab miles.

That's the feeling I initially got from the TKC70 front, but after a little over 100 miles it went away. I was pretty happy with the TKC70 and have a new set for the Tenere going on shortly.

Theirs not much diff between street tires and 'adventure' tires on gravel. Their both gonna suck. Now, loamy dirt, mud, rock then tires are gonna make a big diff. But gravel. nup.

A Vstrom owning friend recommends Mitas E07 Dakar, I dont know if they come in FJR sizes..

Variety of tires on the bikes but most [that had the best success] ran PR2s.

Mitas has a 170-17 listed which would fit just fine. Another option no one has mentioned is Heidenau K60, also available in 170-17 size.

Mounted up a set of Mitas E07s today on a friends Tenere. Aggressive deep tread with a stiff carcass. They get good reviews on the Tenere forum with folks reporting impressive [mileage] life.
