Engine grenaded...
Well, got a call from my brother David last night. The 07 engine gave up the ghost at 104k. Still very young. It gave no signs of a problem. Just let go. Engine is seized. Metal visible in the oil. Looking for a new engine. Any leads would be appreciated. Other option is an 07 in NC that is available. He hasn't made up his mind yet.

Re: Engine grenaded...
Intech,
Sorry to hear that, man. 104k is too young to fail like that, I agree.
I could see that happening, if the Cam Chain Tensioner failed and the cam chain lost the valve timing. The engine would be toast in a heartbeat.
Cheapest option would be a good engine from eBay or maybe from one of the other want-ads listings. You may be able to use a newer engine, by a year or two, but the correct year would be easiest.
Good luck with the hunt.

Yeah, I ride motorcycles. I know why dogs put their heads out of the car windows.
Yeah, I fly hang gliders (3000 hrs.+). I know why the birds sing.

Re: Engine grenaded...
We will be tearing it down to find the cause. The tensioner was changed around 76k. Any Gen2 engine will work fine (non ES of course).Red wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 8:17 am Intech,

If the cam chain tensioner failed, uh yeah.
But this is Bob's old 07 if I understand correctly...so THAT doesn't compute.

No ES Gen 2 engine...did you mean Gen 2 AND Gen 3???...or did you mean no Gen2 AE and any Gen 2...Intech wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 8:25 amWe will be tearing it down to find the cause. That sucks balls. I say we take a ride down to Wheatie's house and steal the engine out his... You know it's never been revved more the 3500rpm.

You must have gone to an Illinois school and can't read. I've owned a GEN 1 and a GEN 3 FJR. Let's see if you can make the next logical step and see why your felonious plan will not work.

Re: Engine grenaded...
Someone did an engine swap using an "AE" motor - on the other forum. (JamesK) Not a big deal, apparently although there was a lot of discussion. Don't rule one out if a good one shows up. Probably can swap a few bits from the dead one to make it work just fine.

As far as the AE engine, can't see why it wouldn't work. The engine is the same. Converting from scratch is hard and expensive but since you'd have all the parts already it "should" be as simple of a swap as a non-ae engine.

I wouldn't. Those AEs are from left over French detuned engines...gixxerjasen wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 9:41 amJust steal the whole bike, it's easier.wheatonFJR wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 9:05 amYou must have gone to an Illinois school and can't read. Any motorcycle engine which has a shift pattern of: Neutral - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 shouldn't be trustedgixxerjasen wrote: ↑Thu Jun 14, 2018 9:41 am ...As far as the AE engine, can't see why it wouldn't work. The engine is the same...

Re: Engine grenaded...
Only the shift drum dictates the shifting order based on the thread I referenced. Still, a good "A" model engine is the preferred choice.

Re: Engine grenaded...
Sorry to hear about the bro's misfortune with the grenading.
Cam chain tensioner replaced at 76k? Is that normal? Come to think of it, maybe the 07/08 had a weak cam chain tensioner and lots of people swapped them?
Do the later models need a CCT so soon?
