2006 AE - Shifting errors
Well it's been awhile since my last post... OK on April 7th I washed the bike, changed the oil and took it for a ride around the area. Pulling up to a red light it wont down shift and I am getting error code Sh_35. I'm stuck in 4th but able to push it to the curb and cut off the ignition. Turned the ignition back on and the error is gone and I can down shift to 1st, squeeze the brake and push the starter and she fires right up. Next Saturday I decided to take a loan wolf ride out to Marlington, WV and I get out to almost Warrington VA and I see the warning light on, I'm in 5th gear and can't down shift so I pull over to turn it off and back on like last week. Doesn't work, I'm getting a different code SH__37. Just as the tow truck pulls up the error clears and I can start and shift the bike. This morning no error codes but when I press the starter the engine sounds starved of fuel and and a valve or two where open, little compression and that loop loop sound. Turned it off then back on she fires right up.
Any constructive ideas out there before I spend $350 at the stealership for diagnostic service?

Re: 2006 AE - Shifting errors
In a certain FJR board that I'm not welcome anymore (was it something I said?)...I believe I remember that occurring on the 06s...or maybe some others.
I believe if you post over there and do a search (dammit)...you should be able to get to the source of your issue.
Or Alan will come along and explain it shortly...

Re: 2006 AE - Shifting errors
Well, howdy Violione, good to see you are still around!
Unfortunately, Viol' has one of those Weird Alice AE thingies. I don't speak AE and don't have an AE FSM.
IIRC, SH_35 indicates a problem with the starting switch, the ECU thinks that the starter button was pressed while the motorcycle was moving. Shift - enabled; Start & Run - enabled. There is a good likelihood that water got into the start button on the handlebar. I don't recall any dealer having actually found the root cause of SH_35 and the 'problem' magically goes away.
IIRC, SH_37 indicates low voltage at the shift actuator. Shift - disabled; Start & Run - disabled. If Start/Run is disabled the ECU does not fire the coils. Once again, wash water may have gotten into a connector. Hopefully it is wash water and it hasn't caused corrosion. If it is just wash water the problem should solve itself.
Once again, it proves that washing a motorcycle is a bad thing Did your wash have substantial pressure? Did you diligently get water hosed everywhere? Water by itself isn't always a real bad thing, after all your FJR is made to run in heavy rain, but if you used detergent and that got into switches and connectors -- that IS a bad thing.
Hopefully some experienced AE owner with a FSM will be along soon to give ya a hand with your problem.

Re: 2006 AE - Shifting errors
Alan, you are exactly right on the symptom of SH_35. Check connections of the Wire Harness Motor Control Unit, Relay Unit Coupler, and the right handlebar Switch Coupler. Could also be Open or Short Circuit in wire harness and or front cowling wire harness. The 2 other options are a defective relay unit or a defective start switch. If it happened after washing, which has never happened to me, I'd start with the Start Switch on the right handlebar. Check the coupler for any pins which may have pulled out.

Re: 2006 AE - Shifting errors
SH_37 has some of the same symptoms as SH_35 except they add Defective Clutch or Shift Actuator Motor into the mix. I know a couple of folks had a problem with the shift actuator actually breaking apart on the '06 AE. It was strengthened in the following years.

As an 07 owner with an 06 subframe this worries me from time to time. If only they'd strengthened the rest of the subframe in the following years.FJRPittsburgh wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 4:24 pm I know a couple of folks had a problem with the shift actuator actually breaking apart on the '06 AE. I haven't heard of that problem on an '07. I have an '08 AE. Now I want a 2019 AE.gixxerjasen wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 4:30 pmAs an 07 owner with an 06 subframe this worries me from time to time. Re: 2006 AE - Shifting errors
Which one? The busting AE shift position? That's on the 06. I was talking about the cracked subframe that potentially affects all years. Hence the stiffy mod. I wouldn't have an 06 subframe otherwise.FJRPittsburgh wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 4:33 pmI haven't heard of that problem on an '07. I have an '08 AE. Broken subframes subject is getting away from the shifting errors of the OP...otherwise I would comment. I am all about staying on topic.

Hello Wheatie, glade that your still larking around.
Ion - Since the divorce my bike has been outside during the winter. Now that I think about the weather, the week of the SH_35 error we got 3" of rain and the winds were gusting 50+mph. The bike lost its cover and I'm sure that the with those winds and rain it was like taking a pressure washer to it. Do you have a suggestion to a good corrosion cleaner I could try to clean up those connections with?

FJRPittsburg, I have ridden it to work 4 out of 5 days this week but my commute is only 25 minutes, nothing happened so far and she runs as good as the day I bought her -- knock on wood.

Poor FJR! One of the better cleaners, also approved for aircraft use is ACF-50. It's pretty easy to find. Amazon has a spray can for <$20. Good luck getting 'er back in Fit As A Fiddle condition. Of course it won't ever be as fit as a violone.

Re: 2006 AE - Shifting errors
I had this happen on my '06. Posted about it elsewhere. It went to the dealer's since it was still under warranty. He spent several days trying to track it down, never got anywhere. In the end I took it away as I needed it for a planned trip, and it gradually improved over a couple of day's riding until it finally stopped happening.
My strong suspicion is that it was water getting somewhere that it shouldn't, though it was never tied down.
