Rear seal leak

Looks like the rear axle is leaking after all, I dont think I can claim road grime any longer.

How do I determine if it is from the pumpkin or axle?

seals and bearing part #s please.If there is a better alternative to OEM, I am listening

Not sure what you mean, coming from the axle or pumpkin? Only place oil is, is in the pumpkin. The axle is dry. Or am I misunderstanding what you are asking?

Yea, make sure to NOT spin the wheel at all when filling up. If you do, let it settle before doing any further filling.

If you did all the fill properly, per Jasen, and it ain't the vent that's spewed some stuff on the top side, pull the pumpkin and see what's leaking and where and we'll go from there. There's no pressure in there, as it's vented. Seepage or leak or just dirt gathering on minor seepage?

Can happen. Sometimes a little too much grease on the drive splines will fling outward... I've done it. Grease sparingly.

I would double check the pumpkin oil to make sure it is not overfilled. I would remove the wheel and wipe everything down and get the minimal amount of grease on the splines. I would wipe everything down so it's all clean then go out and ride.

If you still get a mess, then I'd say you have something to deal with...but I'd make sure things aren't overfilled and seeping out the vent holes first before spending $$.

Can you let us know what makes you say it's leaking? Is there oil coming out the weep hole? Or something else? Just trying to understand the area where it's coming from. Overfilling should make it come out the vent area, but that's totally different than the weep hole, so just trying to understand the symptom.

Recent tire change? I've overgreased the splines once or twice and learned that lesson the hard way. Had a hell of a mess with Honda Moly 60 splattered everywhere. Wiped it down thoroughly and hosed it off using Simple Green and kept an eye on it for a couple weeks. It cleared itself up after flinging all the excess everywhere.

I have the same question as Festus. When my Gen 1 leaked, it was seeping out of the weep hole in the bottom of the housing. If that is the case, then the #5 and #12 seals, and #11 o-ring will need to be replaced. These are what keeps the whale jizz in the pumpkin. You don't need any special tools to do this job, but do need to be mindful of the shims and their orientation when re-assembling.

I wish you had a picture of the weep hole that is underneath where the pumpkin housing meets the driveshaft housing. That picture would tell a lot.

But it's not blowing out of the vent and I agree - it looks like the oil/grease is coming from the Ring side of the pumpkin. There is an oil seal on that side, but that could easily be excess grease being slung from the wheel/pumpkin splines. Did you get a little aggressive with that lubrication during the last wheel change? It's simple enough to pull the rear wheel and have a look. Clean every thing up on both sides, apply a very LIGHT coat of grease to the splines, and watch it for a few hundred miles.

That's how mine looked from using too much lube on the splines during a tire change. Clean wheel thoroughly and keep an eye on it.

Agreed. Too much grease on the spines. Get some degreaser and wash it off. It'll be fine.

I have done that a few times. It doesn't take much grease before it's just a mess.
