Sidecase locks

I have watched a number of Bryans Youtube video’s religiously..so today I thought I would loctite the screws that hold the locks into the sidecases. I even purchased a new tube of gel loctite for the occasion. Upon examination the locks in my sidecases are riveted in...When did Yamaha change from a threaded fastener to a rivet?...I’m guessing that on mine nothing needs to be done..is this correct?

I'll go out on a limb and say that a Yamaha dealer must have done that instead of using the screws. Once a bag has the locks installed it is 'owned' by the bike because the bags are now keyed to match the ignition switch. Up until the locks are added the bags are just generic parts, only unique due to color. I would bet that the bike came with the three locks under the seat just like it always has. Then again, you have a Canadian bike so all bets are off

You don't need to do anything other than pay attention to how hard it is to open the bag locks. If the rivets get loose the latch won't work smoothly.

(The setup guy at the dealer, the one with the thick glasses, fat fingers and no dexterity took a look the tiny screws for the bag locks and thought, 'screw it', and grabbed the rivet gun.)

I'll go oot on a limb and say that what you think you are seeing as the center post for the rivet is actually the security post for the torx screw, or you're looking at the wrong thing. Sorry Bob but without a close-up, detailed picture of the screw/rivet head to look at I simply don't believe you b/c it would call for a re-design (non-threaded hole) of a second part. Mammy Yammy has never been that concerned or energetic aboot it before....

Of course you being in Canadia and having such a new bike well, I could be wrong eh.

Do yourself a favor and throw away the security T10 and replace with M3X8 SS phillips head. A good set of sharp pliers or small vice-grip will grab the T10 head to loosen.

Here are pics of the inside and the outside of the bags...they sure look like pop rivets to me. The only problem that I can think of is that pop rivets are made of aluminum and may over time get loose. I think a future job is to carefully grind the rivets out and replace them with a screw...
