Trying to source a plug

Working on LKLD's old bike, a.k.a. Jolene, and found some wires chewed by something. Bastard chewed them flush with the connector. This is the connector for the Coolant Temperature Sensor. I can't locate a new connector on any Yamaha parts site and when I do find them, the connectors that look the same to me are listed as many different varieties, like Key A, Key B, Key C, Key D, etc.

Two way to go with this, one figure out how to get the original pins out and put new wire on the old pins, or two, get a new connector and put some new wire in the new connector.

Either one is fine with me, but I don't know how to get this thing apart and get the old pins out, and in the case of buying a new one, I can't find it sourced from a Yamaha dealer and I'm not sure which one to pick when going to an electronics site.

Any idea where to get this?

It's coming up as a Toyota connector with that part number.

Best bet is to go to one of those pick-a-part salvage yards with a set of side cutters and your plug as reference. Most of the Japanese vehicles used the same sort of plugs. Walk around for a while and find one that works. Snip the pig tail and barter the price on it. (Most of the ones I have done are just hand wavers and say "come back when you need something important'")

Other than that you could look to Amazon for a terminal and crimper kit. Then, just replace the terminals and sealing gaskets in the connector you have. Make your own pigtail as it were.

$nap-on used to $ell a $uperb terminal kit which was $lightly pricey and co$t prohibitive. Might be another option if you can $tand the price.

Thanks, I see it listed several places, just don't understand the "Key A, Key B" terminology.

I'd love to get this one apart and replace the pins, but I can't figure out the magic combination of pushing and pulling to get them out. I've never seen or used one of these, so it's currently a riddle to me and it's making me feel quite stupid. I tried pushing the pins out the back and they move about 1/32" and stop dead.

Hey, you don't need the connector, all you need are the terminals...... If you look closely, there is a "spring-loaded" tab on the side of the terminal, which can be pushed against the terminal with the appropriate tool, then push-pull a bit and it should "unlock" and you pull the terminal out. Terminals available several places, Eastern Beaver or Cycle Terminal....... it looks close to a Sumitomo 2P090WP-DL, but just get the terminals you'll be OK.

Terminal removal tool, similar to this, various brands and prices... this one too expensive, look at Harbor Fright or a good hardware or automotive store. Likely the one you want is a rectangular wire.

You push in, unlock then push out. Should be fairly easy once unlocked.

While the above replies are valid for many types of connectors, I have found that most which have different colored inserts usually use that as the locking mechanism. You might try to gently pry out the yellow part to see if that allows the pins to come out.

Those terminal removal tools are a godsend too. Get one. You need it. Because...you need it!

Thanks guys, solved it (to some degree). My goal was to have this working by this weekend since it's going to stop snowing today and be in the 50's this weekend. That limited me to trying to find something local or next day airing something in. I went to the local Yamaha dealer. Waste of gas. Wouldn't even look it up on the computer. Just said "We don't do connectors, sorry".

I had found it under a Toyota brand name, so I took the print out to Toyota. The guy looked at it, said he could get the plug and the terminals. Then he took it apart completely, and said "You just need the terminals, they come with a lead of wire attached to them and I can have them here by 9 am tomorrow".

Sold. Wasn't as cheap as 2 new terminals, but the guy said when it comes in, bring it to him and he'll install them back in the plug. Problem solved, and solved by the weekend

Step 1, solve the electrical issues and get it running. Step 2, pull the engine out and fix the transmission.

And just for reference, got a call this morning at 8:50, "Your parts are here".

Went and picked them up, the guy installed the pins and leads into the plug.

Imagine if the Yamaha dealer cared 1/2 as much. Very sad.
