yellow shift warning light

I went to Best Buy yesterday. When I left the 2006 AE was dead, with a solid yellow shift warning light. The speedometer/tach swing and fall, but then the warning lights solid and pressing the start button elicits nothing. The battery is fully charged. Anybody have any thoughts?

Check the shift actuator and make sure it has not come loose. Also check your foot shifter is properly adjusted for 2.5VDC when the shifter is not being operated. This is all explained in the shop manual. With a number of the YCCS faults locked in you will not be able to start the bike. There should be an error code being displayed. It will be "SH" followed by a number. See chapter 8 pages 181-184 in the manual for explanations of the codes.

The shift actuator is solid, and I don't have the skill set to test the voltage. There is no error code. It says SHIFT, and there's a brief graphic of what looks like the outline of an engine. The warning light is solid yellow.

Thank you for checking. Now I'm hoping to find a bike mechanic in the LA area that has worked on FJRs. There are no longer any Yamaha dealers in Los Angeles. (Go figure.)

I had the same problem last year, the shop fixed it by bleeding the clutch, Worked really good the first 300 miles, then I started to get the dreaded error code again, sh-26 & sh-16. I could clear the code and yellow light by turning the key off and on quickly. BTW mine is a 2006 AE with 41k miles. How many miles are on your bike?

Give that a try if not lmk and I’ll tell you what the shop had to do this year when I couldn’t get it started again.

Has your bike had the recall done for the shift actuator mount? That happened in 2006. The original mount was not strong enough and would crack or break, rendering the bike unable to start. It's been a while, and I don't have an AE, but I think it's on the left, along the frame above the swing-arm.

I don't recall (no pun intended) having that done, but it looks okay from the outside. I never use the foot shifter; haven't since I got the AE. Still looking for a local mechanic.

I found several Yamaha dealers in LA, check with a couple of them for a reputable repair shop.

Like I said I had the same problem, they end up shipping my clutch actuator back to Yamaha to get it rebuild.

Thanks. The Yamaha website hasn't been updated in years. All the LA (that's Los Angeles) shops have closed. There are a few in the outlying regions (Pasadena, Torrance), but they're too far to push the bike too at my age. If I'm going there, I have to rent a truck.

I haven't tried bleeding the clutch, but I did try turning it on/off/on quickly. No joy. (BTW I have 30,000 miles on it.) Keep in mind that there's no error code showing, so I don't have a direction. I haven't yet checked the fuses. I'll do that after breakfast. A man need his Raisin Bran.

Do you know how to go into the diagnostic screen (dIAG) to get the error codes? There may not be one showing (active) but there may be one stored.

I would suggest a clutch bleed as well, should be done annually and I bet it hasn't been done for a while.

Clutch bleed annually? I was told every 5 years or so. It’s really pricey, I had to pay 500$, because the swing arm has to be pulled, lousy design

Sure hope you don’t have the same issue I did in sept!! It cost me $3400 to get the clutch acuator fixed. And it took two months.
