Finally got around to changing the fork oil today. It was filthy, but I've seen worse. I've always been on the fence regarding the need for this, even though I try to do it every 2-3 years. Hydraulic systems can go forever without changing the oil, albeit it is usually with a filter. I'm not worried about fork performance, although if I use my imagination, the dampening might be a little crisper. I'm trying to prolong the seal and bushing life.

Something else of note. On each side of the triple clamp, one of the lower bolts was CLEARLY loose. That was alarming. I took great care tightening them with the torque wrench, going back and forth until each was at spec. 17 ft pds seems a bit low for that bolt, but that's about what the other one felt like loosening it.

Changed the oil and filter (simply LOVE the yamalube 10W40, came out like honey at 4K miles), and I'm good to go!!!

Now, where shall I go? Hmmmmmmm......

After a 50 miles test ride this morning, I can say the new fork oil definitely made a difference. The dampening is better, and the pre-load was stiffer under the same adjustment. I ended up backing out the preload about 1 turn.

I replaced the oil with the Honda Showa 5 wt. I'm pleased with the end result. It's definitely better than before in all aspects.
