I take it that since you used the rear seat pan, the smuggler will be removed/installed just like the seat is? Also, are you planning to make the contents of the smuggler waterproof, and if so, how? Would you anticipate it being able to hold the weight of a camping bag?

Just curious, and thinking....

It's bolted to the seat pan, pops off just like the seat. I bought another seat/pan on eBay, I wanted to keep my stock seat as is and like the one on my 05, I'll most likely never use it again.

The other one I built was waterproof and this will be too. The lid keeps any moisture out. I was going to use something like a rubber seal under the lid but never did. I've been caught in showers and washed it without any contents getting wet.

I made this one a little lighter than the 05 one, it's thinner but strong. I believe you could fill it with rocks and not have a problem. Only concern would be it breaking off the mounting holes to the seat pan but that's an easy fix. You also could add more f-glass in the seams to make it as strong as you like.

I use it for my camera, water bottle, hat, something to throw my gloves and glasses in at a quick stop, food, ect.

Getting close....a few final touches, spray paint, drill holes for the lid hinge and add a closer which will be a magnetic cabinet latch.

I think working with fiberglass is an art. I've done F/G work on boats. All structural stuff, no gel coat or pretty painty stuff. Kieefjr is making this look much easier than it really is, IMO. It's a cluster F-ing mess. You get it everywhere and it's like working with a bag full of heated marshmallows.

The other thing I learned with F/G work is how incredibly strong that stuff is. I've replaced stringers in the hull of a boat. On one boat, only part of the stringer was rotten, so I scabbed in a replacement, bolted the joints, and then glassed in the whole thing. Holy cow was that hull strong.

Alright, having a little problem with my image host, I'll have to resort to photoADbucket.

Poor photo here but it's a side by side of the 05 and my new one. Note the angle close to the seat on both. I expected to have a bit of an issue here with the lid opening and I'm still not satisfied with it. I may even rework the lid later on. It's not opening to my satisfaction. I did think of slotting the holes so the lid slides fwd a bit when opening, that may be the easiest fix.
You'll also see the size difference but it really doesn't look that much bigger on the bike.

I also haven't seen if it will fit with the stock rack, not a biggie for me but if I ever sell it that would be nice to know.
I have about $150 in the 05 model but this one is closer to $200, the extra seat pan cost me on this one. (still have the stock Lamm rear seat)



The lid has a magnetic latch and I think it work out pretty good.






I enjoy doing projects like this and it was fun but yeah working with fiberglass and bondo is like a working with hot bag of marshmallows. Have plenty of cardboard and rags on hand.Getting the finish right for painting is time consuming too.

I'll find some foam around here and line the bottom and give it a test ride tomorrow to make sure I can get my leg over it and my butt is not rubbing it

Put it to the test today, it stayed put and the paint didn't peel off, also have more seat room. At times I would push up against the rear seat, not happening now of course. I also didn't kick it with my boot getting on and off.

PS: Vandal = Asshole. It's easy to tear things down; much, much harder to create something new.

The one off by 05/GenI is for sale but there's too many hours in it for it to be worth my time and your money.

Suspect that's the reason Corbins are so costly.
