Gas Tank Cowling Post Repair

Post by fontanaman »

In the spirit contributing something to the forum other than jokes and ride reports I offer the following.

Removing the gas tank cowling front pins from the forward rubber grommet always seems to be an adventure, will they break this time? Well it finally happened. I broke a pin off flush with the cowling. Damn.

The fix was J B Weld. It worked like a champ. The repaired pin has more structural integrity than before. Fancy ass way of saying it is more rigid and has less flex. Solid even! Better than new kinda of solid. J B Weld save me $165 clams.

So there is my technical contribution to the Forum. Hope it helps someone as clumsy as me for breaking the damn thing.

Design idea, why not just a screw with a nut plate?

Spray some silicon spray lube on the rubber grommet and you won't even come close to having that happen again.

Yep, I do the silicone thing too. I have used plastic epoxy which is readily available these days. No name or name brand, it all seems to be the same. Tough stuff, and good if you actually lost the post and had to create a new one.

Yeah, I had to JB Weld one post yrs ago when a dealership F'd it up. It's been since maybe 2011 and it's still holding up fine. I also do the sillycone spritz on the grommet once every other yr or so.

Good God Jim. Where are the pictures man?!?!?!

Oh, yeah, and I grease my grommets also. Always afraid they're gonna break. Glad to know JBWeld actually works!

COOL, I'm not the only one.

My left peg on this panel was cracked and I finished it off when I removed it. Gorilla glue first repair and epoxy glue the last time. I also use grease in the grommets and not only here but everywhere a peg fits a rubber grommet.
