This is a good feature, no guessing at which to buy, just some time figuring out which lens (lens combo) is the best option. I'm a cheap bastard too, so I'm still coming to grips with the cost. Once I finalize the deal for the FJR motor and forks, I'll feel less afraid to peel a couple benjamins off for these.

El Chipo is good when it is good :-)

What you might need then is Denali DM1. They give a nice flood few while still provide a good amount of straight line about 250( from memory) feet

I also just signed up with Baja Desins and they had this thing on the display. With 3 modes:high, medium and a strobe. Check out a quick video

Yup, my issue with the LED's is that they don't even come close to the HID's for down range and their longevity seems to be suspect. Wasn't it Clearlight LED's that just had a bunch of peoples lights shit the bed?

My ideal setup would be the stock lights + Hella's for plowing the hwy + a good set of LED floods for filling in the shoulders on twisty roads.

Last year riding down the Ohio dragon I was leading 2 noobs and Moosehead bringing up the rear at full dark with the Hella's blazing. Apparently, I I rode right past a couple of deer standing on the shoulder in a corner. Never did see them. But I think I saw some Kang and Kodos fly by trying to escape the blast from those Hellas while coming over a hill.

Thank you for all the input here.

This is the next hurdle, which might be a bridge too far.

In reading some on advrider, I like this set up idea: flood light on right side (curb side) and spot on the clutch side. Flood light’s purpose is to light up the ditch on the near side, the spot to light up down range.

Here’s the puzzle; can they be wired to two switches for this result: Right side – flood – off / low / high, and left (clutch side) off / low / high /w hi beam bypass.

For times when I will have a long night expressway run, I’d put spot lenses on both. For early morning starts in the twisties (EOM 500), I’d want both with flood lenses on high.

Twisted Throttle has a sealed wire harness, which is nice, but can it be set up to run on two smaller switches? I’d need to use a couple of small, three position switches that could be mounted near the right handlebar switch housing to give an off, low, high option for each light.
I don’t think I’d get enough use out of the PHID’s to justify having them. It’s a rare occasion where I’m on flat, open, straight ground with no traffic to use them. I think the LED’s offer more flexibility in employment.

What would be totally trick is one of the camera mounts I’ve seen in motogp and now nascar that keeps the camera level when the bike or car goes through a banked corner – similar to the bmw headlight set up on the k1600gt.

I wonder if the strobe lights would be an effective tool for clearing the lines of pirates encountered in the twisties?

it is possible to do what you are asking, but according to you, you are a cheap skate. Those two don't mix :)

Seriously. you are asking for a custom application. You know it will cost you a good money, or you have to design it your self. That said. If you are still interested in Denali for the next 2 weeks I am doing a special on them.

I've got a surplus in my motorcycle budget right now - sold the motor and swingarm/final drive to the PNW crew. I'm a cheap bastard, but that just allows me to stretch the budget...

I've found the lights that twisted throttle uses for the D2D's, which would allow me to go the custom switch route. I need to look at how twisted throttle puts the wire harness together to see if it's worth starting with that and modifying it or starting from scratch and building it myself.

If twisted throttle can provide a switch for each light, i'd have basically an off/low/high switch for each light. The trick then is to see if they will work ergonomically on the hand grip.

I might start with a basic set up, and then work through customizing it once I grow into it - seeing how and when I'm using it.

What type of deal can you get on the D2D's /w harness? The catalog & website list them at $359.99.

ok, that helps on the price, and I don't need the FJR kit because I have a set of mirror mounts already. What is the cut off date for the coupon code?

Wayne,

Jackson Fyffe (yep winner of the EOM 2008 first annual Summer's Eve award) has some highly regarded lights from Clearwater and Baja Designs @ http://www.rideonadv.com/Ride_On_Adv/Home.html and is one of the most helpful folk you could ever make a purchase from.

I got a heat on for a lightbar from Baja Designs for Alegany someday.

Thanks Jim; I've seen the Clearwater's in action (EOM this year) as well as the Rigid Industries 10" SR hybrid light bar. The clearwater lights are awesome, and carry that adjective with their price tag as well. The R-I light bar will not install well on the FJR. I have looked at the R-I D2 Dually lights. Those would accept my custom switching idea - off/low/hi (right flood, left spot).

The twisted throttle denali's definity cater to the plug and play buyer. I want them to do what I want them to do - and that is where the problem lies...

What do you all think of a mounting position for the Denali's? I have the mounts for a set of lights from the mirrors but others are thinking a lower mount at the fender level off the forks. If mounted off the forks they will turn but after a little reading I have found that most claim that they should be mounted at least at head lamp level.
Wayne I do like the idea of mounting as you stated on a gyro, I actually looked into this with this with no luck so far. You know like the drink holders found in a boat or something to that effect, cannot find anything strong enough to support the lights and decided I would have to come up with my own solution.

I think the lights would be most effective if they are mounted on brackets off the mirrors. LED's are pretty robust, but they would get more abuse if mounted down on the fender bolts.

Ya, they'll do that. I accidentally flipped them on in traffic and had the guy in front of me stop for a red, get out of his car and call me an asshole. In between the stream of french-Canadian swears "Chalice! Taber-fuckin-nack LIGHTS este cachon" I heard 'lights' and decided to check them. Well that, and his skin was burning off in big shards. Ya, buddy, good call. I'm an asshole.

I'm still trying to figure out why he called me a pig fucker though.
