Spammer Activity

Post by extrememarine »

I have seen a spike in new accounts that appear to be spammers. If any slip through and you see a post that appears to be a spammer, please report the post and let us know. I am deleting most of the new accounts before they get activated, but there is always the chance one will slip through.

The Spambots have gotten a lot smarter as of late. They already had the ability to search google for answers to simple questions, now they are able to ask google to solve complex questions for them. I'm working on a way to combat this, hopefully I'll be able to figure something out.

For now, the forum has been upgraded to the latest version (I was a bit behind) and I'm working on some better questions for users registration that maybe someone with a brain can figure out, but the bots will have a hard time with.
Trying to be different, just like everyone else.

Thanks dude - The waves keep coming from them with new accounts daily - I just go in and delete the accounts. I did see a couple of repeat IP addresses so I used the ban by IP option for those. I am just wiping the rest out, hoping that I don't hit a legitimate account in the mix.

So far, none have made it inside, so to speak.

So, all of those spammer's were coming from Russian IP ranges. For the time being, I've blocked all IP ranges that I know of from Russia. Not the most popular move, but for now it's a finger in the Dam hopefully.

I don't know if it is possible, but I recently had one where you had to click a radio button to see the pass phrase to enter in a blank to fend of the spambots.

That's one of the many Captcha methods which the bots have figured out. I swear if the ppl that made them put that talent to good use, things would be so much better.

I say for access to the forum, they have to make a phone call, so we know it's a real person on the line. I volunteer Wayne's cell phone.

better question suggestion:
i just googled 'how many tires on a fjr'? the answer did not seem to appear. i am guessing avoiding the word wh**l helps fool it. dunno, just an idea...

You haven't thought this through.....that would take away from precious phone time between the two of you! :manlove:

How you format the question is indeed part of the trick. I generated this one and so far today, I haven't seen anymore "From Russia with Spam" signups.

Please add the fourth, first, sixth and 9th numbers together from the following (82048275578246821)

By mixing up the order as well as spelling out the numbers and the numeric value, I'm hoping this buys us some more time.
